Barnes Bullets

Sorry to post here. This applies to hunting guns but I have a quick question.......Is there any truth to the adage that pure copper Barnes bullets swedge out a barrel and also that once a barrel has had barnes bullets through it, that same barrel won't shoot other bullets well?

Wilbur said it best.

But stop and think.......copper is very soft compared to quality chrome moly steel or corrosion resistant steel (stainless steel). If indeed the dimensions of the bbl would change, then the pressures would be on the edge of, if not into catastrophic failure range.

If anything would be altered, it would be the soft copper bullet being "swaged" as it is forced into the lands and grooves. I think this is called "upset" as a seal around the bullet's circumference is achieved just after ignition. A thousandth can make a lot of difference when reloading lead pills for say a .45 ACP handgun or any other for that matter.

There has to be enough pressure to seal the chamber, but not so much as to stress or blow the action/bbl. A smokey case is often the result of lack of powder - insufficient pressure being generated to expand the case to the chamber walls allowing gas to slip by.

They are excellent.

they are grooved now which reduces the coppering they had the reputation for several yrs ago. What i'v shot lately shows no more copper fouling than any other bullet. plus, they seem to be more accurate than the older bullets.

The Barnes is my favorite premium hunting bullet. You should see my 458 win mag shoot the old 400 grain bullets. @ 100 yds the bullets holes will over lap,, tremendously accurate for such a big rifle. i've shot a couple deer with it and it works very well. like Pole axing them no running no fuss. shoot em through the lungs, they drop like a rock and no meat is ruined. It's the only rilfe i like to shoot with a brake. It's a bit stout without it. I've also shot Barnes in 7mm-08, and 257 weatherby, they work just as advertised. excellent!

clean up is easy with shooters choice. just like you clean your bench gun, but easier. (the bigger calibers don't seem to foul bad at all, really easy to clean)

ps. get some, you will like em..
