At a loss

Okay, I give up. I see a Calfee 40X on Killough's site for $2600 including scope. The scope would have to be worth at least $300, so that leaves $2300 for the rifle more or less. Now, I see Calfee rifles selling definitely for $4,000, SPEC rifles for around $7,000 and maybe one for $11,000. I've watched this rifle with interest and almost made the leap a couple of times, but why no sale. Does the shooting community know something I don't.

if your looking for a calfee rifle that would be a nice one. what is the red knob on the left side of the scope for is what i find myself wondering about:confused:. is it a frozen scope? if i was looking to buy a rifle i would contact them and ask about it. most shooters will tell you the truth about a rifle if they know it. i want a calfee rifle myself, but i will be next year before i can get one.

i'd love a spec rifle, but it would be years before i could afford that!!!!

Madrox, I would call Dan.

Been there done that. Apparently built for a shooter around Calfee's place and then sold to a guy from around Atlanta and then to Killough. No word on how it shoots. Still a Calfee rifle with a scope. Usually would be snatched up quick.

Nobody,

It looks like a lock. Adjust the scope to where you want it and then lock it there so there will be no movement. It's not frozen. Problem with that system is you get it where you want it and then lock it and it will move the POI. Other than that it works.

Mr. Pappas,

Let me clarify. My information is second hand but I don't think I would get any different information from Dan. I think it's reliable.

What does Calfee charge for a history? $50 or so. It could be worth it in this case. Because that could be a bargain.

the rifle

well dan being dan im sure he would give a trial period. buy it shoot it if it doesnt do what you want or expect send it back to him.

it is surprizing its still there i think the last meyers rifle listed here was there a day or 2 and the same thing questions were in the buyers mind im sure.

if you want it i would go for it

If it

were me, I'd contact the person whom Dan is selling it for. I would rather talk to the previouse owners before I would pay Good money from a builder. Even BC, I would think couldn't remember everything about every gun he has built. I would think it's a very good shooter, maybe not Killer still a good deal. Like has been said, shoot it and make a decision based on the results. Still it's nice to see guns sell for a reasonable price instead of the extremely overly inflated price that we've been seeing.

I can't say how it would shoot but I looked the rifle over while at Dan's recently and it looked solid. The bolt seemed nice and tight and the rifle was very clean. Of course the real test would be how it shoots. I've even given it a thought but I've got two other 40X's one by another Bill and it's shooting very good and a Davis 40X that's just been sitting in the safe, not because it's not a shooter but I've just not had the time to really work with the rifle since I got it last year. I want to build a new Turbo this fall/winter so need to watch the urge to just buying rifles for the sake of it.

I figured he was selling it for himself. Does he not own the rifle? Calfee could not possibly remember everything about a rifle, but he has certain records including serial numbers and, as I understand, a few tricks to see if it has been modified. I may contact him. I'd pay $50 to know what he knows about it. If I buy the rifle it's still a hell of a deal.

I believe it's a consignment rifle that Dan's selling for someone.

The rifle is now SOLD!!!
The rifle did belong to Doug Kenimer, and I was selling it on consignment for him.

Some of the rifles I get on consignment i do shoot and try out, but I can not shoot them all. It just gets to be too time consuming, not to mention the ammo. Some of the rifles I will tune and find a lot of ammo for them. It just depends on what the customer wants.

Madrox,

Not sure where your located but Dan's having a ARA club tournament and state tournament the weekend of Aug 14th and 15th at his ranch in central west Texas, about 40 miles south of Abilene. He's also working hard to have his two lane indoor test range ready by then for testing and tuning rifles. If he still has the rifle at that time I know that he'd be more than happy to let you take it for a spin.

Never mind Dan was typing while I was, except if you can you should try to make the trip, heck this is to everyone, Dan's got a nice place to shoot and hang out.

A little publicity is an amazing thing.

This CALFEE Is Mine

Actually I live about an hour from Dan's place and have been watching for a new (to me) stick. I noticed last week that he had some nice rifles on his web page and wanted to drive over to see them. However, I had promised my good wife that we would go on a little trip over the weekend, so, was unable to go to Dan's. When I got back in town Dan had already sold two of the rifles, but still had several nice one so I drove over for my first visit to Dan's. What a great guy! A fine range/club house and soon he had a bevy of sticks arrayed as eye candy. The Calfee was the one that I had the most interest in so soon I was at one of his great benches with a box of Eley Match and a steady cross wind. This rifle shoots! In all honesty, it performed better when Dan showed me just what it was capable of;) He had not had time to shoot it due to his busy schedule. So, a great person, super facility(soon to have an indoor range) and, a rifle built by one of America's premium Smiths on a pleasant afternoon. It doesn't get much better! Regards

Thanks Bob, I've just returned from some quality range time. I had the whole range to myself even on a Saturday, must be the 100+ keeping all the smart people at home in the AC. Fred J I will see you in August. I always enjoy your post, and look forward tomeeting you in person. Regards

Kaz, just curious, is there a bushing in the receiver and a straight barrel; or is the barrel fat at the receiver and then tapers fast? Thanks, Douglas

No problem Douglas,

Dan Killough is a good man, and I would feel confident buying from him anytime. BTW, thanks Dan for your offer of assistance on that one, just did not get one of mine sold in time. Next time for sure. John Harris
