Ar br

next time do some research before putting stuff in print. there is a class for ar's to shoot in at br matches club level. they shoot against other ar's.
and b, if you do the research you will see that i have spent over 10 years, working part time, with no real money, make ar's for BENCHREST COMPETITION.

I don't think were singing from the same page anymore. I thought we were talking about total accuracy. If you have a hot shooting AR, take it to Camp Perry, don't take it to the Super Shoot.

Will there be an AR class at the super shoot?

We have used most of the premium AR triggers. The best we have found so far is the single stage "fire control system" from JP. Out of the box it is quite good and with a little work it improves. These can be set light and crisp so as to work off the bench.

Even with hand built rifles and premium BR quality barrels the best we have ever done with the AR platform aggs just over 1/4". And this was with a 222 barrel with no gas port. I.e. manual bolt. With good barrels and triggers the AR platform is easy to get under 1/2" but smaller aggs are difficult. (Yes, some of the times we get very tight three shot and five shot bug holes but not aggs.)

i havnt seen an ar shooting group, but at our local range one guy shoots for score most every match i the ar class and usualy shoots in the high 230's sometimes slipping into the 240's with a few X's. Not impressive by BR standards i know but this would be a decent score most of the time in our factory class. I wish as a whole there was more welcome for these shootes to come and try it. I know at my range BR turn out has been shrinking every year, but our AR shooter has brought at least 4 of his NRA High Power friends to try the AR class and factory class, and a few have talked about buying a BR rifle for this season. So for the furure of the sport maby we should be more open minded to other shooting platforms, and let the compete in thier own class to develop thier best accuracy, much as bolt guns have over the past 20 years.

Williev,

Your post is good. At our range we have four regular BR shooters and six irregular shooters. We shoot Fri Sat & Sun. Sat we usually have a few shooters show up with hunting rifles and ARs. I try to time with these shooters. I am about to leave for the range now. In addition to my Panda I am carry my 25 BR with an 8.5-25, a Win 22 rim fire, and an AR-15 with a 3X9.

I have found it is near impossible to start new shooters with the 36 and larger power scopes we use in BR. With my two rifles with the more easy use scopes I have worked two shooters into BR shooting this past year. I have as much fun working with these new shooters as with the BR game.

We spend more time talking about skill improvement that scores.

octopus,
it took me several years of load testing to find a load to go under .2 in my 223. it is a 1/14 twist and shoots 52/53 match bullets at 3500/3600fps. suprisingly the 308 took no time to go under .2 both guns have 36x's

Mike,

The 1-14 223 sounds good. Dugan's 222 is 26" heavy 1-14 barrel and it is the best AR we have built, or seen. We have been shooting four AR-10s in 308 over the years. Two were 18" 1-10 barrels similar to the M-4. After a lot of work these got down to about 5/8" but most of the time were closer to 3/4". From time to time we would get a very small five shot group by never an agg under about 3/4" Dugan now has one with a 26" heavy 1-12 barrel with a JP brake on it. This one shoots tighter. Still over 1/2" most of the time. I think the slower twist helps. The AR's will never match the bolt rifles in precision but they can be fun and challenging to shoot.

I am off the the range this AM with my M-4 Stoner. I will be shooting against Pandas, Rem 40X and Savages this morning. If I am "on" I maybe can win 1 out of 5 of the matches. We are shooting at used small rifle primes @ 100 yards this morning. Mostly my wins this AM if any will be luck more than anything.

to make the 308 shoot...watch the score shooters.....
i use a 15 twist with 135's it shoots under .2 with a small grp of 0.116, BIB bullets and n140 powder.....
need a shallow draft butt stock and a better trigger
