Another Wilson Die ??

Alinwa,
Turning into shoulders, does not always eliminate donuts.
depends a lot on the radius on the leading edge of cutter.
Taking necks down in smaller increments may work harden
in a more uniform manner.
I use an old bbl set up for crush fit for my PPC and 6Wasp
Both .002 short, to fireform. They can be put right in service
by neck sizing on there second firing. The old barrels never need
cleaned. It can be tough on locking lugs though

Bob, agreed.

I shouldn't have used the term "irregular, inside out donuts" because it isn't really accurate. ;)

I grind my cutters so that they stop cutting as they feather into the shoulder and as you can see those shoulders were crookedy enough that while I got in far enough to eliminate the donut I had to go TOO deep on the one side which results in something the opposite of a donut, a thin spot. My "thin" spots are still as thick as the necks so I'm OK but from the inside they look funny after they're fired.

Of course the casual observer will never notice this :D

I had the same problem with a Wilson neck die

I kept getting excessive runout on the case neck every time I used the die. Switching to a standard 7/8-14 die would correct the problem, but I needed the Wilson die to work. A call to their factory yielded the answer. He asked if I was using a Wilson bushing or a Redding bushing. I was using a Redding bushing. Switching to a Wilson bushing cured the problem completely. You might want to give a quick look and see what you have in there...

I am using Redding bushings. I tried a wilson bushing and that worked. Thanks!!!!

a little run out that important?

I used to fret alot about run out. But I have not been able to tell any difference between perfectly concentric bullets and those with a few thousandths ro.

I am shooting a tight neck and jamming. Is that the reason? Or am I just not looking/shooting good enough?

Thanks,

Mark

Thank, Al. I'll give Jim a call. I knew he converted dies to bushibg style (done a couple for me), but didn't know he could hone out a regular FL die to a custom size.

Joe,

Jim has been on here several times talking about polishing dies out a few thousandths and about opening up necks....... there may be some mods that he doesn't do but for that you'd have to talk to him. If he can do it it'll be done right, this I know.

I recently purchased a Redding FL 6ppc die (Gunbroker.com) that was special made??
Evidently someone paid Redding to make a FL die to their spec..the box had a label that said .259 GO .260 NO GO neck diam.
I use a .260 bushing die, but I wanted to go to a FL die for simplicity, so I turned a piece of hardwood dowel down to .263 and put the die in the lathe chuck and the wood dowel in a tailstock chuck...then applied a liberal amount of Clover 800 grit carbide lapping compound to the wood dowel...running the dowel in/out the neck area about 30-50 times..I was able to get a perfect
.260" diameter neck on my sized cases...And ZERO runout on my case gage...It works great...I can bump the shoulder just enough to chamber easily, and it sizes the web to .440"...It reduces my shoulder diameter from .332" to .330"
I think one could open the neck area up like this up to .003" accurately...
