Ms J and I are exploring the Black Hills area this week. We spent the night in Speerfish Canyon last night and are headed for Deadwood today. Lovely area out here. I understand why there are lots of new houses and not many older ones for sale; nothing like back East anyway.

If you go anyplace close to Newell, SD you might visit with James Anderson[gunmaker]. You can see my almost finished custom rifle. He does work that will knock your socks off.

I found out where Newell is and am going to try to get up there in the next two days. We spent the night last night in Custer as we wanted to return to Carzy Horse this morning. We spent a couple of hours at Crazy Horse and then I decided I wanted to visit Wounded Knee. We drove over there and were unable to easily get to the monument because of a soft, muddy patch in the road so headed back. It took all afternoon to get there and was a letdown but we saw where it was and saw the two cemeteries there from where we stopped.

Drove until we got to Chardon, Nebraska and Hove Too for the night. We will explore here a bit tomorrow and then do the Custer Park loop and on up to Rapid City or Speerfish. The road through the Pine Ridge Reservation is mostly torn up so we went south to Rt 20 and on over to 385, I think it is, that goes up to The Black Hills. Pretty country everywhere out here. Considered driving up to Porcupine but the day was geting short.

The Bison Roundup and Auction is going on just now so rooms at Custer were hard to come by.

Found a brochure in the Motel last night for a Fur Trade Museum in Chadron so we dicided to take it in. WOW! Unbelieveable the quantity and quality of the things in it. The museum is on one of the origional Fur Trade sites with the origional "Sodder" buildings still there. Inside the museum is the largest collection of "Fur Trade" items I have seen to date. We visited a Fur Trade museum in Pinedale, Wy a couple of years ago but it wouldn't make one of the rooms of the place in Chadron.

We spent so long in the museum we were late for the Bison Auction. Oh Well! Saw the facilities for it anyway. Very interesting. We are going to visit the Speerfish Canyon tomorrow and then on to Newell. We leave for home at 0 dark thirty Wednesday morning. It's been a great trip.

I plan to be there Dick

We are leaving here at 0dark30 tomorrow and will be in Ct at around 1:30 PM if all goes well. I plan to rest Thursday and drive North on Friday. Suppose

Butch,

We drove over and visited with Jim Anderson today. Had a great visit and he showed me some nice stuff he is doing. The lad seems to know his way around the gun bidness. Lovely wood work and the metal stuff is nice as well.

We have had a great trip. I think it is a great place to visit every now and again.
