Aguila Rifle Match?

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone has used Aguila Rifle Match ammo. I'm wondering how consistent the rounds are throughout a box. I ask because it's cheap enough that it could work fine for practice. I've only shot 2 tournaments (indoor BR50), and my weapon seems to like Wolf MT fine, but it's very difficult to find. Fed 711B shoots fantastic in it as well, but I don't find it to be as consistenty loaded. Thanks for the info. As curiosity, what type of targets do you big boys (meaning not this amateur!) shoot at 50 yds? The league I'm in is shooting IBS 50yd 25 bull. Man is it fun! Thanks for your imput. Also, if there are any ways to find where matches are in the plains here (KS) that'd be great too.

Most of the Benchrest is done on ARA, IR 50/50, RBA, or USBR targets. They can all be found on the front page of this website. Follow this link. They are listed on the right side. http://www.benchrest.com/

To find matches in your area go to this page http://www.killoughshootingsports.com/Webs/RangeMaps.html
Then zoom in on each map to Kansas. That will show you the ARA and IR 50/50 ranges.

I do not know much about Aguila, so I can not help you there.

Hope this helps,
Dan Killough

Thanks Dan

Thanks for the info on targets and matches. I'll check up on it. Coming from motorcycle roadracing, this sport is fun AND cost effective! (It's just too bad I can't keep myself off of the racetrack entirely...). Thanks again!

You would be suprised how many of these shooters are ex-racers. It seems to be the same type of competition. Always looking for that little bit extra.

I guess similar interests run deep... Same personality types. I might try to get my hands on some of the Aguila to see how consistent it is, and if it works at all in my weapon.

kubaceski,

Yupp, Dan is right!

From the early-60's through mid-80's my family use to host Motocross races here on our ex-dairy farm in Pepperell, MA. Of course, in the beginning they were called "Scrambles" as the word "Motocross" didn't come about in the U.S. until 1967 (I think) when we invited the Europeans over for the first ever international challenge match. We ended up having Jim McKay come out with the whole team from Wide World of Sports, a Military flyover, the Goodyear Blimp! The whole works! In fact, that race ended up being rebroadcast on Wide World of Sports 3 or 4 different times over the next 15 years. Man, I wish I could get a copy of that footage now, just for posterity sake.

Anyway, the Europeans not only kicked our butts, but they did so by lapping most of the field, and we had all of the best riders in the U.S. there to representing our country. A real eye-opener! At the time our track was rated as the #2 Motocross track in the world with numero uno being somewhere over in Germany.

I never did any racing myself, but my brother was into the bikes for a while. In fact, he was the one who brought the whole idea of building the track before the family. But, after not too long he moved over to roadracing the bikes. Then, in the early 70's he got involved with fomula cars, both V's and Fords, and ended up packing up and moved to England, where he's been for some 30 years now. No lost on our part though as his overall personality fit their society much better than ours.

Enough of the history lesson.

Let me know where you're from, and if you're old enough to have ever heard of Pepperell.

Thanks,

Dave Shattuck

I've heard of Pepperell, Dave. We used to have a pretty good motocross track out here, named Carlsbad. Many a classic battle was seen as the Euros came over kicking butt. Just a few years later, the tide would turn and then it was the Americans turn to roost the foreigners. Ah, what a special time to be a racer.

Our Match Director out here, Pat Garity, is an ol' stock car racer too.

Gordon,,

The difference between the first meeting with the Euro's, and all follow-ups was; we had to learn how to race standing up. I remember watching those guys in awe as their butts would hardly touch the seat other than maybe when cornering over the course of the entire race, not even in the pit area, while our guys were sitting down most of the time.

Gordon, I'm glad you had a chance to visit our place all those years ago. I still live there even though over half of the property was sold off by my parents. Where the track was is now all houses. I own a little over 129 out of the original 363 acres, and 62+ of that is now on the market. The damn property taxes and liability insurance rates sure do make it tough to retain anything as it was! I guess it's called progress?

Dave,

I'm from a small Kansas town, living in Wichita now. I've never heard of Pepperell, and I was born in 1982. Max, thanks for the link.

I Remember

Dave, I remember PEPPERELL. As an old dirt racer I remember those times & later when Brad Lackey went to Europe. I also know' that it's a lot easier getting out of bed on Monday after shooting all weekend, than it was after racing all weekend. There were lots of motorcross tracks, flat tracks & cross-country layouts around back in the day. Most of those old tracks in this area have homes on them now too. Those really were the "good old days". Best wishes, Glynn

B/W Arial View of the old Pepperell Bike Track

Glenn,

Do you think we will ever meet up again? It's been over 7 years since we had a chance to sit down and shared a story or two.

To give you a trip down memory lane, I tried to upload a Black & White arial view of the old race track, plus showing some of the rest of our property. But, after screwing around for a while with no luck, I guess you'll just have to do it the old fashion way and open the file for yourself, so here it is.

Dave, thanks for the photo of the race track. I certainly hope to see you again. What little shooting I,ve been doing lately has been IR50-50. You know what they say. "What goes around, comes around". I wish you an early spring. Glynn

Rifles and Racing

Now that photo looks like a motocross track, not the whoop de do's they hold in buildings nowadays! I used to race motocross, enduros and lime runs in my younger(and more fit days). Being stuck in a mud hole in a creek up to both axles on a 100 degree day in the Texas sun made me think, " you idiot, this a good way to have a stroke!" So I took up bass fishing. Then it was sporting clays and now it is benchrest shooting. Guess I'll do benchrest until they have to prop me up with my rifle.

Rode Suzukis, Yamahas and my favorite- Ossa.

Ah, the good ole' days.

Best,

Dan Batko

No hits on Aguila?

Still nobody running across this thread with experience with Aguila Rifle Match ammo, eh? Maybe I'll have to order some up (no local dealer). It's fun to see you ex racers around here. Some folks tend to be cut from similar cloth...

Tried Aguila a few years back when I was pretty new to the BR game. What I recall is that none of the lots tested would shoot in any of our guns and the left overs went in the plinking bucket. Oh yeah, the powder or primer let out a foul odor when ignited......

aguila rifle match

some was given to me a while ago/ It's eley primed
It shoots well at 50 ft just like sg red box. I havent shot it in the wind at 50 yds yet. so that's all i can say. maybe ok in side for rifle or pistol.
The one i have is standard velocity

Hi Gerry,
What's sg red box, and why are we shooting it at a mere 50ft? Sorry for the dumb question, but I'm new at this. Thanks!

ARA Match

Next Sunday morning, signing in at 9:00 AM and shooting starting at 9:30, we will hols an ARA match at the Air Capital Gun Club. For directions go to www.aircapgunclub.org.

I have been hesitant to jump in because my use has not been benchrest but since no one else has commented - here goes.

I am a Master class shooter in rimfire metallic silhouette and I have used the standard velocity Aguila for a few years for rimfire metallic sihouette. I have tested it at 40 through 100 meters and it has grouped as well as the various lots of mid-grade Ely that I tried from time to time, and the Ely did not shoot any better than the Aquila. I also tried it against different lots of Wolf Match Target and it generally shot better that the Wolf in my rifles, I almost forgot to mention that this was in three different rifle,an Anschutz 1710, a Sako Finnfire, and a Cooper M57. I have shot through 5 cases of it in the last few years, all different lot numbers, and it all seemed to shoot well enough for my use.

I doubt that it will be competitive at high-level matches but at the club level I would not feel too badly handicapped using it. The reason I say that is that occasionally I have an unexplained miss, of course it could be me but I try to be honest with myself when calling my shots and generally I know where the shot should hit. But perhaps it is me because I have not seen this happen on paper although I do not do a lot of paper shooting mostly just to verifly my zero's.

Using my sporter silhouette rifle with a 2# trigger and a 20x Leupold I shot a 237 with 22 X's using it at a IR 50/50 match - I did not have a benchrest grade rifle and wanted to give the game a try so I used what I had on hand - generally speaking I was satisfied with the results.

It is available direct from Centurion Ordinance (look them up on Google). Now the bad news - the last case I bought in 2006 was $112.00 plus UPS shipping, I ordered a case about a month ago and it is now $258.00 + shipping. I whined a bit and got the same old story - the world economy, lead prices, brass prices, etc. But the good news is that it still shoots as well, at least for my sport.
