Purchasing a moderate priced BR rifle this week in 6PPC using a XP100 receiver. Any special advantages, say over the Rem. M700? Thanks, r in s.

Solid bottom is one thing. They were always a good platform to build on before the custom actions and still are.

When I first got into benchrest I asked a custom action maker if a Remington (XP-100) was any good. He hesitated a split second and said, "To be honest they'll shoot with any custom action out there but two things are against them: 1. They are slower than a custom and 2: There is a psychological disadvantage in that you have in the back of your mind that you are beaten by better equipment."

I took a sleeve XP in trade on one of my benchrest rifles years ago and it's languished in the shop since. I just bought a new coned bolt for it and had a better handle TIG welded on thanks to Dan Armstrong. Dan did a beautiful job at a reasonable cost.
I think I'll build me a HV on it and chamber it in .220 Beggs just for S&G's. When the previouse owner owned it he was a force to be reckoned with in the SE Region. I think it's going to make a good gun even if I never compete with it.

It's a fine action with a little work' many light varmint sleeved rifles were built on them years ago. the reason was weight. making a 10.5 pound rifle
I currently have a 660 that has a sold follower installed. It is going on
a dixie machine {panda footprint sleeve] It has a recoil lug built in.
the caliber will be 30 br. i know it will be fine. The short throw should help speed up the shots.

Gerry, does Dixie Machine have a website showing those sleeves? Thanks.

Before the advent of so many Custom Actions, the XP-100 was one of the actions of choice for building a winning Benchrest Rifle.
The only 'advantage' it has over a regular Rem 700 is that it has no magazine cut-away, hence in theory, is stiffer and gives better support.
In all reality, if the Rifle was built correctly, it will shoot just as accurate as one built on a custom. That is not the same as saying it will compete in The Competitive Arena as well, but those are two different things......jackie

Ask on 6mmbr.com. I saw the ad for a sleeve
I bought it from the site.
It really is a nice sleeve. It has a recoil lug built right in.
The price was reasonable. $125 Nice fellow to deal with.
I'll see if i can find the address.

I started out ---

With a trued XP-- It was unsleaved, With the solid bottom, I saw no reason to sleave it. Best shooting rifle I ever owned. But you couldnt win aggs with it. As Mickey pointed out, " Its to slow" I could'nt get off 2 shots in the same condition. I did well in trigger pulling contest but most matches were switchy. Many new shooters soon learn the value of wind flags and getting them all off in the same condition.

I hope to help this one with the coned bolt. The bolt is also a tad oversized and I've reamed the action to fit. I'll see if it can be shot fast after I get back from the Super Shoot. I'm going to get a barrel for it while I'm there.

I agree with Jerry's XP100 observations. I had sleeved XP100 based 6PPC BR gun that would shoot with the best of them but they have a heavy bolt lift due to their light firing pin needing stiff spring to ensure good ignition. That heavy bolt lift made it shift in the bags during reloading and therefore made it "slow"
compared to a custom action.

I have 2

XP-100 actioned LV. One is a .222 Rem, and the other a 6PPC. They both shoot well, better than me. One advantage that I utilized, was the ability to use a HV taper and still retain a 22 in barrel. The guns are both LV. The 6 PPC is my ugly gun (really ugly), but it will shoot right along with my BAT. You are right...you can't shoot them as fast as a custom action, but I am a bag squeezing 'picker', although I am trying to learn to shoot faster. They would be a very good 'entry' level BR rifle, and even a good back-up.

In most cases the bolt handle is changed. A new longer bolt handle
will make the rifle easier to cock. bolt lift should improve.
The short throw is definitely a help. You don't have to move your face off the stock. he cobra that stiller makes is similar. the suggestion was from speedy. The reason i am sleeving the 660 is 2 fold 1 to install the follower. 2 to increase bedding area. The bolt handle is also being changed to improve bolt timing after the lapping in of the recoil lugs.

Xp-100

I shot several in my early years, both sleaved and bare. I did the work, ie. bolt handle, coned bolt, flutting the bolt, and blue printing the action. I had good results with them and would do it again. Remember that was the late 70's early 80's. One gun I had shot 12 Os in matches and a record. The loading block I had had 7 holes, 2 fowlers and 5 for record. Up untill a few years ago Bob Brackney was still shooting them and was competitive.

Action sleeve

Doesn't Speedy make action sleeves? I know he did before he went to Colorado. You might want to contact him using a method listed in the forum under his name.
