Action screw torque testing at the range

Don’t have experience as most members here. I heard somewhere that some guys fine tune their action screw torque at the range. I looked on the this forum and couldn’t find anywhere a suggestion as to how it’s done. I took the action and barrel off my stock cause I worked on a scratch I had on the butt. Put everything back together after and it is not as accurate as it was. I had forgotten the torque I had used before and I suspect it’s not the same now. Just wondering if there is a way to test at the range and find the optimal torque.

Sure is. Start at a lower value, say 20 inch pounds. Shoot a few groups and go to 25 inch pounds. Continue to 30, 35 and 40 inch pounds. Shoot groups at each setting and choose the best group. Some folks use different settings for front and back action screws. I have read that if your rifle shoots best with two different settings for front and back action screws you have a bedding problem. I'm assuming this is a rmfire rifle you have. With a centerfire I have no clue. My Turbo V3 action piller bedded in a Rotex stock is set at 32 inch pounds which is what my gunsmith uses. However, I can go up all the way to 40 inch pounds with no discernable difference in group size. Hope this helps,

What is the actual rifle you are working with ?? In most cases if not all, I'll tell you
to set them to factory spec. Are you shooting factory ammo or hand loading ??

I have the factory specs, just that another Benchrest competitor was mentioning about fine tuning action screw torques at the range but added very few shooters would share how it’s done. I just wanted to know wether he was pulling my leg or if there really was a way to fine tune torque tension

Bottom line.....Keep life simple. torque em' to spec and move on to the more
important things. The only one I'll mention specifically if it's a Savage, after the
screws are tight, check to see if you can slide a dollar bill under the tang. They
like that little bit of clearance.......I still do not know what rifle your speaking of......

Savage 110, Shillen 1inch straight barrel, one is 30BR, the other is 6BR. Slide a dollar bîll under the tang ? So, if I get this right, only bed the action but not under the tang ?
