Action Binding?

The nice thing about a BAT is you can blow primers clean out of the case & never feel a thing. But someday I might grab 4198 or 4895 instead of 4831. If that ever happens, I want the loading port on the opposite side of my face...

No, I'm not going to make the World Open this year. Like most years these days, someone in the family is in poor health -- two this year, & I'm one of them. Hope to make the IBS Nationals; we'll see.

I suggest you get your Savage timed and trued. Your problems will go away. Savages can have multiple issues.

I have been considering that option. I suppose it's a matter of expectations. I'd like to have something that at least would be competitive in a modified class - not just a groundhog rifle, but this could be a safety concern nonetheless with the hard to extract cases (with mild to moderate loads).

Toney:

When I time and true a Savage action. I use a .701 PT&G bolt body (round or fluted). They are made long so .020-.040" has to be removed after the lugs are trued to adjust the priamary extraction. I also remove the bur at the shelf and helical cocking ramp. I make a steel shouldered cap for the back of the cocking piece it has a small dimple drilled with a center drill on the back side. I drill and tap the main screw .250 X 28 tpi and insert a .750 X .250 28tpi grade 8 cone point set screw. I can unscrew the cocking piece about 6-8 turns, this brings the cocking piece pin reaward. Now when I put it all together the spring tension on the firing pin can be adjusted with an allen wrench externally. I do some other adjustment but the bolt lift is reduced 50-60%. It is my feeling that Savage actions are better for F-Class competition than BR competition. Most of my customers want a rifle that will shoot 20 shots inside a .4" group at 100 yards.

The only other thing I had to compare it to was a BAT (that has since won the Shamrock and Super Shoot in the hands of a much better shooter than I). So one question to me is, can it beat an XP 100, trued 700, etc. It's more about whether a Savage with the right modifications has the potential to beat the others in a class such as the UBR factory modified factory action.

But I suppose the ultimate question is, would a modified Savage ever be able to provide the satisfaction that a used custom would for a hobby shooter like me. Once one has tasted the sweetness of a BAT and Jewell... well you know what I mean.

I am not bashing Savages. In my experience, they are some of the best factory, out of the box rifles a person can own. I love the Accutrigger for groundhogs and crows, but I can't see free recoil as an option at the bench. As folks can see, this is sort of a "Help Me Decide" issue.

Thanks again Nat,
Tony
