A real good gunsmith lathe

Yes, I've got a Rockwell 14x40 lathe. I also have a Rockwell Toolmaker surface grinder and belong to that group which just started up recently. The Rockwell 14x40 is a real workhorse compared to every other lathe I've used and has a nice reverse lever feature for the leadscrew. It's much bigger and heavier than the 11", but I'll never get it down the steps into my basement, thus my desire for an 11". It really sucked running the lathe in January when it was -5 outside and a balmy +15 degrees in the unheated garage.

Hey I'm with you on the January cold

My 16" Southbend sit in a garage north of me. I have been out there when it was 5 degrees. Turn on the heater. An it might get to 40 after a hour or two. Can't wait to have my own Garage.

A friend of mine has a bunch of equipment in his basement. Index mill, two big lathe and a Rockwell 11". He took it all apart and hauled it down stairs. Oh guess what he has back problems... Go figure:eek:
 
I don't have a problem taking it apart to get it down stairs, but I've got a turn halfway down and the stairs end facing a wall four feet away. There is no way I'm going to get the 7 foot long, 1300+ lb bed down and around that corner. I'm going to have my hands full getting my smallish Index 40 mill down this summer and the main casting on it is 4-500 lbs.

Oh yeah, I just returned from my physical therapy appointment for my back this morning. I'm thinking about hiring out the grunt work.

The 11" Rockwell is a very nice lathe, I like mine and own several other brand lathes. Just saw the one below eBay, only 9 hours to go- price $800. It has 36" bed, 3 jaw buck chuck, 4 jaw, face plate, flex collets, no steady rest but you can now buy an aftermarket for less then used OEM's sell for, dump the rocker tool post for a Aloris and go.
