Hi everyone....
I'm brand new here and I need a little help from some more experienced shooters. I have recently started shooting at a local club at long range (from 600-1100 yards) using .308 rifles. I have just bought my first rifle, a Styer Police .308 and I need to get a scope for it. I know S&B and leupold are very good scopes but my budget doesn't go that far unfortunatly. My question is can you reccomend some scope brands that are cheaper but still cut it? The best option is for me to try them first but I dought I will manage to convince any shop of that! Many thanks guys... Dave

Dave ...

Have you also posted your inquiry on the 600/1000 yard forum since that's the yardage you apparently intend to shoot ??? ;)

Thanks guys, i forgot to mention i am in the UK. Yeah i heard bushnell are ok too...what about Simmons? i will post in the other forum now...

Ok well iv scoured the net all day long and i have managed to narrow some down that i like the look of (please dont laugh as i know these are lower end scopes!) Im looking for one that is going to do me for now, can withstand a recoil from a .308, and have enough MOA adjustment to get me out to 1100 yards max.
They are :
Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24 x 40
Bushnell Elite 3200 7-21 x 40
Nikko Sterling Targetmaster 10-50x 60
Nikon Fieldmaster 6-18 x 40

If anyone has any opinions/view they are more than welcome....not the best i know, but i guess we all got to start somewere.
Dave.

I think you'll find the reticle in the bushnell to course for long range shooting. This is the reason I got rid of mine. Try looking for a used leupold 24X, Weaver T, or if you can save for a bit a used nightforce.

It has been my observation

that Nightforce scopes have an inordinate amount of problems with lense bedding. In the group of folks I compete in a goodly number of them have had to send their scopes back and some more than once. It can be quite a pain to have to not only send the scope back but wonder why suddenly one's rifle isn't shooting like it's old self. Expensive doesn't always mean quality.

Congrats. on the Steyr. Wish I could afford one.
I'd mount a Kahles ZF95 lOx42mm Tactical Scope on it.

The Burris signature select 6-24x that midway has on sale looks like a great one to me.

What was the problems with the NF? I've never heard of this problem with them. I have 2 myself and between me and my buddies we around 12 of them with no problems.

Re: New scope...

Davey,
I'd look for a Weaver T-36... This is in your price range if you are considering a Bushnell 4200 and for the ranges you specify, its my opinion this would be a more optimum scope. I have Bushnell's, Sightrons etc. and three Weaver T-36 scopes which are my first choice for serious target shooting...

For more versatile use, I have a Sightron SIIB 6X-24X which is tops in construction and optics however for use at the range, the Weaver T-36 wins hands down...

Happy Shooting,
Mitch & Shadow...

I would look at a weaver t24 or the same in a sightron, 36x might be a bit much with mirage and all. Although I have seen some using variable units up to 60x.

You may consider a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50 or even a 4.5-14x44 model.
