I shot in a Rimfire Benchrest match last weekend using my Hall Sporter with a 36 X scope on it. As I was shooting from left to right I went from a solid 10X to an 8 at 1:00. Conditions had not changed very much so I tried one in the sighter and another 10.

I then got to thinking, I had seen a similar problem in the past shooting my 6x rifles with throwing shots up at 11::00 when cranking the farley to the limit of it's travel up and sideways.

So, after that experience I moved the rear bag slightly to keep the Joy Stick more or less in the center and not much of a movement either verticle or horizontal. I think the front bag was pinching the forend causing the shots to rise and go right

Anyone else experienced this?

I've seen it before Pete, if you run out of travel in any direction it will throw a shot. I've learned that if you are close to the end of travel you had better stop and change something to give you more travel or you will regret it. :) Steve

Farley Lesson
The rubber around the joy stick that is attached to the Farley base appears to have some "Stored Energy trying to return to neutral-center" at its limits in all directions. Removing or un attaching it at the rest will help some. It is my experience that the left-right extremes are the most troubling-problem areas. Centerfire group targets work well with a Farley but targets like ARA rimfire targets will require adjusting the Farley due to lack of adequate travel (as you experienced).
Steve is right, best to shoot in the middle of the Farleys range of travel then no regrets.

What about the Sebs ?

I wonder if they experience the same situation? I took the rubber thing off mine a couple of years ago. What is sad is I have to keep learning the lesson over and over again :(:mad:
 
I know the rubber boot on a farley will tend to move the stick but I don't think this is the issue with throwing shots when you are out of travel. I say this because I have a shadetree top that doesn't have the boot and it will do the same thing. I'm not sure what causes it but I do know that it will do it because I've learned that the hard way, from my experience the shot will go the way that you are out of travel with(ie if you are bottomed out the shot will go low). Steve Pete, you know what I always say , you can't fix stupid! That's been my problem for years. :):)

I use a SEB rest and shooting centerfire Benchrest matches I set the joystick at the center and don't have a problem. I also shoot .22 Benchrest and I have enough travel left/ and up/down and don't have any problem. I think the rubber boot might be a little thinner than the Farley and therefore doesn't offer as much resistance. You might try a SEB boot and see if that helps. I wonder if an industrial supply place would carry rubber boots that you could adapt?

In my area none of the top RF shooters use a joystick rest. The Fulghum is the rest of choice for a two piece and many of the top guys go to a one piece once the Sporter class has been shot.
 
Take the boot off the Farley. It looks like it is there to protect the innerds from grit and dirt, but the bottom and top under the bag are open to the elements. Problem solved as to the boot. Also tighten the tension screws to keep it in place or get Butch's tension screws. But that is a good suggesiton about reaching the limits, as it would appear that that could pinch the stock a bit. May be..............
