I just want to recognize a fine shooting performance this last Sunday by Steve Epstein.
Steve has been on the rise at our club the last few years having won SOY 2 of the last 3 years.
Sloughhouse Benchrest Shooters runs NBRSA Group and VFS match on the first weekend of most months at the Sac Valley Shooting Center outside of Ione, Ca.
Anyone who has shot on our range knows the conditions are usually pretty rough, with a lot of switchy conditions.
We did not have a match scheduled for March do to the fact that a lot of our regulars (unfortunately not me) are attending the Cactus next weekend.
Since we had the range anyway I decided to run an impromptu score match for anyone that wanted to brave the weather. Forecast was for light rain but much less then what we had been experiencing in Northern Calif.
So when I showed up Steve Epstein was there and set up, but no one else. Hold a match with only 2 shooters?
Since Steve and I both have new 30 BR barrels we wanted to try I decided to hold the match anyway. (At least scoring would be easy!)
It was raining lightly pretty much all morning, but the conditions were very readable and consistent.
We shot our usual format 100 yds first then 200 yds.
I shot a 250-22x to edge Steve’s 250-20x to take the 100 yd match.
We then moved the frames to 200 yds where Steve shot 250-15x to beat my 250-9x.
Steve ended up with a 500-35x to soundly trounce my 500-31x.
If you think those are exceptional scores you would be correct.
The 250-15x at 200 and the 500-35x for the agg that Steve shot both would tie the current NBRSA World records for VFS.
Did I mention the conditions were readable? I've decided I want to shoot in the rain all the time. My only win at the Cactus was also shot in a rain storm!
So even though this was just a fun match it was still some mighty impressive shooting by Steve. It's not often you can shoot a 500-31 x and lose!
Combined score of 1000-66x for both shooters.
Both shooting new Krieger 1-17’s, chambered with my new .332 NK 0 Lead JGS reamer, both wearing Ezell's tuners,
and both want to shoot tiny dots with the Berger 115’s and 4198.
Pictures of Steve’s targets are attached.
Enjoy!
Greg
