I don't hunt but I have a 700 Rem target rifle in 7mm STW with a 29" Hart barrel set up specificially for 1 mile silhouette. 180 grain Bergers are excellent. Any cartridge at that range is asking to wound animals as they can walk out of the trajectory after you fire, or a mid range breeze can move the bullet by feet.

Comparing it to other 7mm magnums:
cartridge case_cap SAAMI_Max case_len
7mm Rem Mag 82 grains 62366 psi 2.500"
7mm Wby Mag 87 grain 63817 psi 2.549"
7mm STW 97 grain 66717 psi 2.85"
7mm Rem Ultra 112 grain 63817 psi 2.85"

I also have a"factory" 7mm Rem Mag Win 70 Laredo with a 26" barrel and its accuracy at 1000 yards is comparable to the 7mm STW (at 1000 yards) with considerably ligher recoil.

It seem to me you need to conisder the maximum range you'd consider shooting (at) a deer or elk. I consider myself a pretty good shot but I know I could not >reliably< make clean kills at 1000 yards. I've shot 6" five shot groups at 1000 yards, but I've also been off by more than a yard with first shots in changing donditons. It doesn't seem to me that traking a wounded elk with a 1000 yard head start would be easy.

I don't seem to recall reading anywhere in garyb's post about 1000 yards, much less a mile. Those are YOUR words, not his. He may well consider 400 yards "long range". Don't jump to conclusions!!

tod...dont jump on your own tougne.....

this is the 600 yd/1000yd BENCHREST forum

so it is correct to discuss the two distances listed for this forum....

much simpler if he had posted on a hunting or general forum....

So my last thread (tonight) on the 300 win is all about 1000 yard shooting??? NOT HARDLY. Don't get me wrong, my next 1K match BBL might just be a 300 win mag, and I figured some of the guys here shoot one. This is the best place for advice that I have ever seen!!! But...as you say ....this IS the 600/1000 yard sight, right. So......Is 600 yards "long range"????? Maybe 600 is long range for him, but he shure-n-l never said a word about 1000 yards or 1 mile. And I don't recall gary asking for a lesson on ethics......I guess that is your domain, along with Mr Boyd.

Did you notice that g n brezinski chose to start this thread in the 600/1000 yard benchrest section, and that the the 28" heavy varmint contour at least suggests shooting from a rest. The 7mm Rem Mag has sufficient energy and accuracy with appropriate skill and bullet selection for killing an elk reliably at 400 and maybe to 600 yards, but gnb is asking about the 7mm Weatherby and the 7mm STW. I was attempting not to get into the ethics of extreme range hunting. I only suggested that gnb consider the range at which he wants to hunt before selecting the cartrige.

no,,
but the owner of this site is a BENCHREST shooter. this is his site and it is set up to support BENCHREST shooting. to help others, who have questions that are not BENCHREST related, or have non-BENCHREST related questions(like HUNTING), he set up a seperate forum...FACTORY/HYBRID rifles. this would be the appropriate forum for both of these postings. you will get few replies here, as most benchrest shooters have taken the stand to just ignore poorly placed posts.

3300 fps

Go with the cartridge that will shoot a Barnes 160 grain triple-shock at a solid 3300 fps.

This combo will get the job done that you have in mind.

You will not need a barrel longer than 26 inches.

Picking the correct powder will be the trick.

Everything is a compromise.

7mm Rem Mag fun to shoot
7 STW has enough horsepower to do anything a 7MM should be used for.
7mm RUM for those that like having the biggest baddest rifle around. Short barrel life.
How about a 7/338 Lapua, I've got a reamer for that. Got a 7/388 lapua Imp also.
Just depends on how crazy you want to get. Nothing free, you pay for velocity.

It's fallen out of favor but I've never built an STW that I or my customers didn't really like.

My advice is to chamber the barrel for 7mm Rem Mag or 7mm RSAUM and practice shooting at long range. I really enjoy shooting the Rem Mag but the STW without a brake is abusive. In readable conditions I would be comfortable shooting deer with either the Rem Mag or RSAUM out to 1000yards or so. For Elk I would limit my shots to 300 to 400 yards unless you want to move up to someting like a 338 RUM 338 Lapua or 338-378Wby.

Just my opinion

James

IMHO I would look at the 7mm Dakota (NO BELT) 7mm WSM or a 7mm based on the new Ruger cases 7/375 for the high end or 7/300 more sensible;) I have 7stw sendero and a Win super grade 7stw good guns but I hate the belts:(

You need to define what you long range ideas are.

There ins't much the standard 7rm can't do to 1K. Like wise the 300wm.

Gary B

If you are dead set on 7mm, start with a 7mm WSM. The 7mm REM ULTRA MAG may be more fun than you care to experience with a rifle light enough to drag to the killing fields. I own both, and I will probably never shoot the ultra enough to work up an accurate load! When I torch it off, it belches, bellars, jumps up about 18", does a "marlin twist" and comes back down about 2" off the side of the cradle of the front rest, gorping the stock. The Dakota has a little larger rim, necessitating opening up the bolt face or reducing the rim diameter. For deer or elk, I really like my .300 WEATH., 308 NORMA, But I really prefer my bow. STEVE.

Any 7mm that was properly built with good components, sports good glass, is Pillar Bedded and nestled in a quality LR stock and all is resting on the proper rest will do as long as you are shooting a .600+ BC bullet at 2,950+fps. LR to me is 600+ with 600 being the short portion of the range. Here's mine, a 7-300wsm I built. 180 VLD Bergers at 2,907fps

Go with a ....

... simple cartridge that is easy to load for. I use 300 Win Mags, 300 WSM, and 7mm Rem Mags. All very easy to tune. And the best dies are available for easy purchase.

From experience, stay away from the 7 WSM. It will eat a barrel in less than 500 rounds. It took me two barrels to understand what was happening. After all of the success that we had seen with the 300 WSM, I was very disappointed with the 7 WSM.

The 300 Win Mags give me more than 2200 rounds, and the 7mm Rem Mags give about 1200 rounds. I am now just changing the first 300 WSM barrel, as it gave me 4500+ rounds and was still competitive.

For those who think otherwise on the 7mm WSM, I have a reamer for sale, used only twice.

I have over 1200 rounds on my 7mm saum and I think it's still shooting ok, I pulled a 49-1 and a 49-2 out of my a$$ at the NBRSA 1K Nationals. The last LG targets it shot before the Nationals were a 50-1, then a 46 in the shootoff.

James,

I will admit that I have no experience with the 7mm SAUM. It may be the ticket for 7mm. I would be curious as to what powder and bullet combination you are using. And how many barrel have you had chambered for that cartridge?

The spec of the reamer are minimum sammi specs, .308 neck, and I believe what my gunsmith calls a live pilot. Made by Mr. Kiff.
