I have been looking to restock my 788 .223 Ackley. The vendors that I see specify different stocks for different cal even though they are all short action. Is this due to the inletting for the mag? Bbl diameter?
Does it matter?
Thanks

Since Rem only made one length of 788, I guess it would be barrel channel and its relation to the factory barrel offerrings.

You can modify any inletting, as long as it isn't already too big. Is this a stock with a real skinny forearm?.........jackie

it has a skinny forend. I had an oem stock that has a skinny forend and it was not particularly to my liking. Gave it to a buddy.I have the gun(with a varmit bbl.) in a pretty bad after market stock. I was lookin' for a close to drop in fit. This is a workhorse type gun so nothing fancy is needed. Everything I see is oem size. I might have to settle for one for the bigger cal.'s because as you said, bigger bbl channel.

Stock & Bbl contours/magazines & firing pin shroud thread diameters(9/16" & 5/8") are the only variations that I'm aware of in 788 Rem's.
