6x47 rem

I'm building a sporting rifle in 6x47 rem and have a few questions. Can I form the cases from .204 ruger cases? Who makes the best sizing die? Anyone have a sizing die for sale?

I use 6X47Lapua cases. I use my dies for my 6.5X47L with smaller bushings. I don't know about the 204, but why go to the trouble?

The necks are a tad shorter on the 204.
You could get away with it but really your better off with the 222 mag case.
I believe remington still makes them.
You can get wilson dies the inline to seat and the knock out type same as the 222 mag only with a different size neck bushing. There may be others.
I would check redding in the sinclair catalogue.

You could probably use .204's, but it would require probably two or three necking up operations and probably annealing the neck/shoulder area of the cases. I'd neck them up to .22 then 6 mm with neck turning expanders, then push the shoulders back in a non-bushing FL die.

If the reamer hasn't been ordered you might want to do some cases to see what the neck thickness is because they're likely to be thinner than on cases made from .222 Mag brass.

I'm in the process of necking up unfired 5.56x45 blank brass (~48 mm long) to .25 cal so that I can turn them into a 6x47 35° (6mm -222 Mag 35°) cases. When the FL die arrives from Hornady's custom shop I'll neck them down to 6mm and form a false shoulder. Then they'll need to be neck turned. :( It's a pain in the tail, but way cheaper than using .222 Mags since I got 300 cases for $20, and the same number of .222 Mags would have cost well over $100.

Should keep me out of evil places like gun shops this winter though which will make the boss lady happy.

This is for the New Gomers that don't know What a 6x47 Rem was all About

Wilbur knows the rumor of the sizzilin 6x47 Rem days gone by, emphasis on days gone by. I was there and what I call the golden generation of BR the 60-mid 80's the 6x47 Rem was there also. A 6x47 is made off a .222 Mag case necked up to 6mm no trimming needed. Some used Herters .222 Mag Cases made in Sweden I would say Hertzen---. Some used Federal nickel 6x47. Some used RWS 5.6x50 Mag. I got em all use Wilson dies and some custom stuff. I don't have my original 6x47 but I have a Hart barrel 788 that has shot a .25 agg once in competition. Most times my 6x47 beats the crap of out Savage guys at the Range that's the way I like it. Don't get me wrong I am a PPC man like most of you but there was a long time that the 6x47 probably had as many chambers put though McMillan, Hart, Shilen, H-S, Matco barrels and others with 6x47 specs than any other reamers. Even the fabled .222 took a back seat to the 6x47 in LV/HV when a guy was a one gun guy in the 3 Gun Nats like Harold Broughton 1977 and Ron Hoehn 1978 winners of 3 gun back then. The fabled Don Geraci won 3 SS in a row in the 80's a few with his 6x47.

Now guys it could have been another 6mm back then but it was the 6x47. Brass was most always the determining factor if a 6x47 was going to shoot well one day when the shooter was hot or crap the next day when he was not. There was allot of brass sorting going on by the shooters in the know. It was normal for a 6x47 shooter to buy 500 brass Remington, Winchester, or Federal brass, sort out several lots of 50 and sell the rest and sell the rest. Again I know I was there. Case spinners homemade or bought from Fowler, Hart, or whoever provided them were the hot ticket for the 6x47 competitor. Later some used the same spinners to critique their bullet purchases and make bullet makers awndry, pissed off, and nervous because of the loose lips of amateurs becoming bullet connoisseurs.

Spin the reel forward to todays BR where the well heeled yuppie or opie can open his wallet no prep in involved and shoot .1 agg with of coarse an industry prepared 6 PPC. And then if the new guy has a good speel he hooks up with the well heeled regular and it's off to Disney World for the Florida Shoots. While some of us are going to Lytle Creek tommorrow to shoot in the Devil Winds. Now you ask who's the stupid one I am I'm going to Lytle Creek with my 22 and 6 PPC, Hart Rest and Mini Gator bag ala Louie of coarse.

I disagree with some of the people stearing you away from the 6x47.
I have had 3 over the years , Now they have been changed some what.
I have the improved now.
I beleve the 6/47 though an old case is quite accurate
The modern powders of today should fix those little problems that are spoken of.
We now have extream powders that fix many problems.
WE also have short cuts from hodgdon, that allow you more room for powders in the case. The old IMR {coarse stuff] varied qute a bit from lot to lot. Things have changed . Powders are a lot more uniform.
We also have those nice powders from vv like n133 and n130.
Hogdon shot cut 4198, and now what i think may be a winner for us the 8208xbr. Remember you can always change things like reaming it to improved.
If your still not satisfied you can go the ppc route.
Just leave enough barrel shank for changes if your considering this.
My improved is close to the ppc in velocity with 60gr bullets

Thanks for the help. I think I will just go with the .222 mag cases. I plan to use the gun for whitetails in North Texas.

I may not even qualify as a "New Gomer" but I think it's great that I can go to this Forum and get answers from guys that know way more on the subject than I do.

Anyone have any loads for heavier (85-100gr) bullets?

Thanks again

This is from Hogdons website. I own 2 6-204 rugers and they are very close to the 6x47. You can neck up from .204 to 6mm in one pass. I have lost about 5 cases out of several hundred necking up.
