6PPC rifle for one starting in benchrest

I asked this question on another thread but do not think it was where it would be seen. I have searched but have not found a good answer as to what would be a good 6PPC rifle for a beginner to benchrest. I already shoot and load for rifle and pistol but would really like to get a good tool to evaluate my talent and perseverance for benchrest. Price is somewhat important but not a barrier to a good starter.

I'd watch for a nice Panda actioned rifle in the classifieds here. Maybe $1200-1500.00 and you're started. Maybe even find a complete outfit with dies and brass. If you don't like it you can get pretty much your money back when you turn it loose. And if you like it there's never anything wrong with having a Panda as a base.

Any "purpose built" Benchrest Rifle will fill the bill. There are some great deals in our own classifieds. Heck, I think Cecil Tucker has a Farley Actioned 6PPC there for about $1700. That is about as good as it will get.........jackie

Get the real deal. Panda, Viper, Farley, Hall, Nesika, etc etc. I shot a 6br Savage in all our group matches last year. I did good compared to all the other factory based rifles but never came close to beating any of the BR guns.

I got a GOOD 6ppc Viper about 2 months ago and fired it in last month's group match. I can now start really learning to shoot BR because this rifle will pound them in there. First 100 yd target was a .189 [ only good for 2nd on that match ]. I then shot .3's and one .4. The .3's would have been good enough last year with the Savage but now they were last on every target. WOW

At 200 I had several groups with 4 shots into a .3 but there was always a flyer opening them up to a .7 or .8. I did shoot 2 .5's and got 4th at 200.

I may try to seat the bullets out a few thou more. I really think I need to start watching ALL the windflags. I think I get fixated on the #1 flag.

Mike has a whale of a deal on an RFD actioned rifle. Look under gunsmiths for his site.

I started this quest with the thought there was only a few rifles that would be appropriate. I now see that there are many multiplied by customization that has been done. I have some serious research to do to understand which one I would like to start. I do not jump into things without thinking them through so I will be reviewing the rifles suggested to make the best decision for me. While I shoot every week at a range with many experienced shooters, I do not know any that are as serious benchrest shooters as the majority on this forum. I will continue reviewing this forum, and others, daily as I gain the information I need to make a decision. Thank you all for your help.

Mr. Rangerat, you don't need to rush, but please don't take too many long years, the BR needs more of young shooters now.

Rangerat,

Understand something....... there's Bench Rest Rifles, and there's Everything Else.

There is NOTHING at your usual hangouts that'll even be in the same room with a 6PPC Benchrest Rifle, in fact there's no quicker way to make enemies at the range than to bring in a BR gun. Believe me, NOTHING!!! at any range anywhere, this is the real deal. YOU can put 5 bullets into the same hole, no air showing except for windblown shots which you can SEE are wind blown. A true BR Rifle is more accurate than a laser transit. For real.

Most everybody here (Except Jackie Schmidt ;) he was a little smarter than the rest of us!) has spent twenty years of their life "upgrading" step by step until they finally get a chance to shoot a REAL BR Rifle.

Then it's all over.

There's no going back.

You can buy one built or you can have one built, it'll take the better part of a year to have one built.

You absolutely CANNOT buy one from a factory somewhere although there are builders who'll occasionally have one or two in stock, pre-built. Before you spend a single penny do yourself a favor and track down a Benchrester and ask to shoot with him. Or just bite the bullet and buy one. If you decide to buy one don't obsess about "which parts" it's made from. Whether it's a Viper or a Borden or a Stolle or a Hall action....... whether it's a Bartlein or a Shilen or a Krieger or a Hart barrel......... whether the stock is McMillan or Rimrock or whatever....... Instead, if you find one that interests you just post the question/description right here on the board and knowledgeable people will be glad to help you decide.

There is NO OTHER RESOURCE IN THE WORLD as efficient as this message board. Take it from one who's spent tens of thousands of dollars finding this out ;)

The choices of parts are many

Beyond that, your rifle should look like all the rifles. Don't try to have a multipurpose rifle. In the end, it will be the only rifle you will want or care to shoot.

Truer words will never be spoken.

I have been shooting "Benchrest" rifles for 2 1/2 years. I now own 6 rigs
and all of them can shoot rings around my varmint rifles.

I used to take them out on occasion to see what they will do. No more.
They sit in my safe and collect dust.
