6mm Beggs at the Bluebonnet

Yeah, the rumor is true guys. I slept right through one of the relays on Saturday, but I'm quite certain that if not for that and the bad influence of my old friend, Arnold Jewel, I would have won the match hands down. (Yeah, right)

Seriously, we had a great time at the Dietz Range in New Braunfels. It was wonderful to see old friends and make new ones. Conditions on Saturday were challenging to say the least and yours truly did not shoot well but things got better Sunday for the 200/100 Sporter.

My little 6mm Beggs, "ol' Bud Too" shot terrific and led much of the way in both 100 and 200 but this old man could not quite hold off the determined charge of my young friend, Mike Conry. Mike won the Sporter Grand and yours truly settled for second, but I could not have been happier. This was the first time the 6mm Beggs cartridge was used in a registered match, and I was thrilled with the way it performed. Here are the details.

The rifle is chambered in 6mm Beggs with a .269 neck. Fed 205M primers were used behind a load of 26.5 grains of H4198 Extreme for an average MV of 3380. This load is in the upper window and should be approached with care. Bart's 68 grain Headhunter bullets were seated .015 off 'jam' with light neck tension. Nothing was changed throughout the two days with the exception of the barrel tuner. The tuner was zeroed before the first match of the day and dialed in during the three minute warmup. After that, small adjustments were necessary to compensate for increases in density altitude. No surprises; everything performed as advertised.

So, after a day of rest it's back to the tunnel. See you at the Super Shoot.

I was keeping an eye on how the 6MM Beggs was performing, and I must say, it sure held it's own. Like a lot of shooters, Mr. Push, Mr. Mirage, and their sneeky little cousin "Verticle" got a couple of your groups, but all in all, I would say that the 6Beggs gives up nothing to a 6PPC, or anything else, for that matter.
That being said, I still think you should put your best efforts toward the 22 Beggs. Having a chambering that will shoot heads up with a 22PPC 100 Short, without all of the hassle of making cases, is, in my opinion, a big step in the right direction.
As for missing your relay, you are in good company. Jay Lynn did the same thing a while back, and we remind him of it every chance we get. I doubt we will let you forget anytime soon either..........jackie

Seems like Jay Lynn was so busy watching my group and giving me holy 'ell, he forgot he was supposed to be shooting.
Didn't he crossfire with his first record shot Saturday?
Jay Buddy, you will be famous forever!

Taking the heat off Jay Lynn

Jay Lynn said he appreciated me taking the heat off him by sleeping through my relay. Not a problem my friend. At least it proves we are not all up tight and stressed out about this stuff; huh?

Gene ...

The question is: Where were you? After meeting you earlier in the day, LTC Larue and I looked all over for you. He wanted to talk to you about the 220. We even looked in your truck to see if you had fallen asleep because I knew your relay was comming up. The only place we didn't look was inside that Million Dollar Double Bus Size Rolling Motor Home parked next to Mr. Dietz's shop. Oh well ... history was made. Art

Jackie, sure was good to see you at the Bluebonnet. Congratulations on yet another Two-Gun win. Thanks for the kind words about my 6mm cartridge. Having built one yourself you speak from experience when you say, "The 6mm Beggs gives up nothing to the 6ppc or anything else for that matter."

You are probably right when you say I should concentrate on the 220 because of the simplicity of case prep. I usually shoot the 220 except in Sporter class. The 22 is so pleasant to shoot and a little less expensive to boot, but I like having the 6mm to cover the Sporter class with a cartridge that uses the same sizing die. All I change when going from 220 to 6mm is the neck bushing.

Keep in touch; looking forward to shooting with you again.

Gene, old buddy

I know you’re very confident with the Beggs chamberings and tuner set-up, but it’s my opinion you should get a few more wins under your belt before starting to handicap yourself by skipping relays.

I’m certain it was the overriding fear of embarrassing your fellow competitors that caused you to skip a relay….you just wanted to even-up the playing field. Right?

Now, doesn’t that sound better than what you posted and it would also have eliminated the potential of being the butt of jokes for years to come. You could only have been accused of being overconfident.

Remember the story I told you about the first benchrest match I attended back in the 1970’s and my discovery of the ballistic properties of wind drift? Now, that was embarrassing!

Good luck this summer.

Someone finally figured it out,,

Landy, you saw right thru me; didn't you? Yep, I knew that if I didn't do something quick, I was going to win by such a wide margin that some might get discouraged and quit the game, so I just sat out a relay to level the field. (Yeah right, uh huh, and not only that,,,,,)

Good Shootin', Gene

Glad to see the Maiden Voyage of the 6mmBeggs went well. I'll see how it does at 6600' Memorial Day Weekend!;)

Cartridge Case Specs

Gene:

You might have posted this previously but, if not, would you post a diagram of the case's dimensions.

Thanks,

Glen

Glen,

I'm sorry, but I do not have a way of e-mailing the reamer print for the Beggs cartridges, but if you will contact either JGS or Pacific Tool, they can send you a print. Or, if you will give me your mailing address, I can send it by mail. Which of the cartridges are you interested in? I am presently chambering in both 220 and 6mm with either a no turn or tight neck configuration.

6mmBeggs (actually 220)

Gene, thanks.

I was interested in the 220 from what I've read here and a comment the other day from Jackie. I'll give Pacific a call. Thanks again.
