6br vs. 6brx (or Dasher) - Short range

I was wanting to see if any of you had any experience comparing a std. 6br to a brx or dasher at the shorter ranges. I understand the advantages at the longer ranges (500+ yards), but what about from 100 to 300 yards.

If a std. 6br will shoot in the .2s at 100, would you expect the exact same gun/barrel to still shoot in the .2s if it was an improved 6br.

Thanks.

I believe Steve (Redrock) in South Dakota shoots a BRX. Maybe he would chime in here.

Myself, I would tend to believe that if this barrel shot .2's as a BR and was rechambered (with same quality of chambering) it would be able to shoot .2's with more powder and more recoil and more speed and upset the bags more so you would have to shoot more carefully. What was the question?

6BR @ Short Range

I had a Jim Borden built 6br that would rival any 6PPC @ 100 yrds.
Only problem was it was a Long Range Light (17lbs) rifle so I could'nt use it at 100/200 matches

Ferris Pindell is/was a advocate of the BR case and 90-105 grain bullets for short range. When he developed his bullet tip pointing die, that is what he had in mind.

Skills?

I don't have a 6mm but a 30brx, and I enjoy it but I don't know your skills?

if your kinda new to the game no need to mess with fireforming, nothing wrong with just loading and shooting.

Well

I have not noticed that long line of 6PPC shooters waiting to get their 6BR's built.

The brutal truth is, as fine of a cartridge that a 6BR is, it will, in the end, not agg with a 6PPC at 100-200 yards. The problem is that it is just enough overbore, (as compared to a 6PPC), that it crosses over that seemingly perfect powder column to bullet diameter that seems to make the 6PPC so affective.

The same affectivness can be said for the 22PPC .100 short, and the 6BR .100 short.

And, of course, the 30BR.........JACKIE

I think Jackie may have hit on what the actual question is in regards to powder column to bullet diameter ratio. Since the std. 6br has proven to not be able to agg. quite as well as a ppc, is the ~10% jump in powder to a brx or dasher going to cause another drop in agg. compared to a std. 6br out to 200 yards?

Thanks.

Drop in Agg??

I shoot a 30br and a 30brx I don't experience any drop in agg between the two, I simply shoot at a higher node with the BRX. Both are at max case capacity driving 118-125gr bullets.

Understanding that short range Benchrest is a game of minimums I can see no advantage of shooting a 6BRX in shortrange benchrest unless you plan on driving bullets in the 90-105gr range at the same velocity as a 6br would drive bullets in the 65-75grain range...two different animals.

Do you shoot group or score or neither, and just want it for play?

This gun will be more of a fun shoot/groundhog shoot gun so ranges will vary from 100-600 or so yards, with 300 or so being the most common. It will not be a 100-200 yard benchrest gun...it will be built similar to a 17 pound LG.

If you want real consistent accuracy at 1-300 yards the ppc is the only choice. I am waiting on my new BAT 30BR to be completed and i really enjoy that chambering. However we had a Varmint for score match this past weekend and i used my 6ppc. I shot my best ever score. That game is supposed to be dominated by the big 30BR, and for good reason. The 30cal bullets catch those bullseye a bit easier simply because the bullets is bigger. I did notice while shooting my 300 yard target that the little ppc was cutting the wind better than i remeber my old 30 br ever did. I am kinda torn really. The 30 pokes big holes but my ppc is so very accurate!!!!! I will say my x count was down a bit, but when you have the top score the x count doesnt mean squat!!! I am falling more in love with the ppc every time i shoot it!!! Lee
