6BR & RL 15 powder?

I have been working up some loads for my Rem 700 6BR with a 10 twist 26" barrel. The bullet of choice is the 95gr Berger VLD and the 95gr SMK.

I am using it for reaching out to 1000 on my parents farm. Everything makes it there OK with my last 4 bullets of 5 inside of 5". No real signs of any verticle at that range just horizontal dispersion due to wind.

The numbers that I have been getting off my chronograph seem really good with the RL15. I have been pushing them at approx 3050 with 31grs of the stuff.

Here is the problem, it is dirtier than all hell. When I clean after 15 rounds I get Mud Pie out of the barrel.

Is that the norm for RL 15?

I know Jackie did some testing with it in his 6BR project a while back.

I am going to try Varget but what about H4895? Any ideas if 4895 is suitable where to start?

6br and reloader 15

You have one of the combinations for the br and long range.
More information is on 6mmbr.com. Quite a few articles too.
There's loading data also. i hope this helps and good luck with your BR.
I'm playing with a dasher later this year.

varget

FYI, I haven't been too pleased with the Varget I purchased... it seems to be one of the "slow" lots (very slow, in fact). I can't get it to pressure up running a compressed load under some Berger 105s, and it's real dirty.

Faster Powder

Sounds like you both need a little faster powder. RE-15 and Varget running at the right pressure are very clean.

I have a 6br improved 40 degree shoulder with a long, tight, neck and I shoot the 95 berger vld's at 3050 with both Varget and RL15. My gun likes both and I get the same kind of accuracy you are getting. I have noticed that RL15 is certainly dirtier than Varget but nothing out of the ordinary. About like N133 in the ppc. But both powders could possibly be dirtier than expected at mild loads.

6br & RL 15 powder

Yes i think h 4895 will work also. I tried some in my dasher, so far it works pretty well. It is the old IMR and the RL 15. I think i'll do better with the short cut H4895.
Neither meter very well so it's slows up the reloading.
I'm sure the short cut will meter well.

The project I did, for 6MMBR.COM, was with a 28 inch long 1-8 twist .237-4groove Krieger. We concentrated on the heavier and longer bullets, 105 to 107 grn.

I did find R-15 to be the best agging powder with that combination. In fact, with the 105 Berger VLD, it was agging at a sub .200 level at 200 yards.

I did not experience what you are experiencing. The R-15 I was using shot very clean at that upper end pressure.

Of course, one of the complaints about the entire Reloader series is that they are not very consistant from lot to lot and year to year. It has been over three years since I performed those test, the stuff might be quite different now.

As for Varget, I was not impressed with it in my test, although from what I gather, the F-Class shooters love it.

But I was looking for ultimate agging capability. It is a different game.........jackie

I wish

my RL 15 were like 133 in my PPC. 2 wet patches and basically clean.

Not in this case, mud.

I will try the Varget then the H4895. To be honest I have never had much luck with Varget in the past but am willing to give it a "REDUX" like Jackie and his 120 in the 30 PPC.

4895 has been good to me in the past and hopefully will still be. I do have a bit of 140 but do not want to get hung up on it as it could be hit and miss to get.

Thanks so far fellows,
Calvin
