600 or 1K range in Houston area?

Bnhpr

Ben Hooper
I'm looking for a 600 yard or 100 yd place to shoot around Houston. I shoot at the American shooting center occasionally, and Carter, but am looking for a longer range.

600 yd range

American Shooting Center has a 600 yd range. But you have to qualify at 300 yds before you are allowed on the 600 yd range.

I was told it was not open to the public? I have shot there 2 times in the 100yd range.

Do you know the specifics of the qualification?

The qualification is pretty simple and straightforward. All you do is set up one of their 300 yard targets at 300 yards and you must shoot five, and only five shots on the target, and all must be in the white center of the target, or about 6".

So, if you can shoot a 6" 5 shot group at 300 yards, you can qual to shoot at 600.

Me and a couple of guys shoot there often, and would welcome you to join us anytime. There are no benches down there, so it is all prone, and you will want to bring a mat of some sort.

we catch shooters sometimes shooting from the 300 bench's cross-firing the range. we just tell them if they want to shoot the 600 either bring a bench, or shoot prone like the rest of us. a couple have got mad about it but they had to go home to mommy and cry.

I don't mind shooting prone, as long as I don't have to lay in a bed of fire ants, those things suck.

Ben,

Hello, I wanted to chime in here and say we would love to have new shooters come to our matches at Bayou rifles. Myself and two others run the 300 & 600 yard matches which are held the third Sunday of the month. We also have a 1000 yard match the first month of every month. Andrew werner is the Match Director.

The squading begins at 7am and ends at 7:30 am, we try to start shooting by 8am. All are welcome and the entry fee is $15. Our website also has a lot of information, www.Bayourifles.org

This Sunday we are hosting a 300 yard / 60 shot match. You would need approx 70 rounds for sighters. I will be calling the match this month. If you need more information please email me at drmac67@aol

Hope you can make one of our matches.:D

At a pistol match last month at Bayou Rifles in the Addicks area, I heard the rifle range was going to close. Do you know if this is true?

Redcrow,

I don't know about the Addicks pistol range, I've never been there...

I can tell you the Juliff Rifle Range is going gang busters and there is no danger of it closing !!

Again, I put the friendly invite out to all able to make it, we love to see new shooters and we have a 1k match the first Sunday of every month plus a 300/600 match the third Sunday of the month. There are other matches listed on our website at www.Bayourifles.org

Come on out and join us :D

American Shooting Center

The Greater Houston Benchrest Shooters, (about 5 shooters and myself), installed all of the Benches that you see on the 300 yard line. We did it to hold the first 200-300 yard NBRSA Long Range Varmint Nationals.
We used to hold a monthly club match at the 100-200 range, plus two Registered NBRSA Benchrest Matches. They would close that portion of the range to the general public while we held our matches.
It all ended one Sunday at a club match. The head of the range, (I cannot remember his name), had always let us run our matches under NBRSA rules. This included the safety rules.
That Sunday, though, the only person there was one of those "minimum wage" range officers who decided that we were violating all of their range rules. We tried to explain the NBRSA Bolts Out Rule, and how we were very dilegent in making sure that it was inforced. But he would have none of it. He said if we did not obey all range rules, including no cleaning of Rifles during cease fires, we would be ordered to leave.
We did leave, and never went back.
It is a shame that such a fine facility is just sitting there, hardley used, when we could be having matches there. And all of that work we put in was just a wasted effort.
I am interested in the 300 yard Format at BayouRifles. What are the general rules??...........jackie

Dough,
i've been living in the houston area for a number of years. i know about the range that bayou rifles have at the juliff road site. i have attend one match as a spectator and was not received very courteously at the time. the only questions i really needed an answer to was the availability of the range for none members. i was told that if i didn't want to be a member that was ok i could find another place to shoot day to day. i tried to explain that that range is about 100 miles from my house in northwest houston and wouldn't be able to make the yearly fee pay for itself. i shoot at the addicks range 3 times a month depending on the weather. if i joined the bayou rifles club my range fees and travel costs would be prohibitive. as i would only be able to make it out maybe 2 times a month. i basically got an oh well from the people i was talking to. i left not a happy camper, as i would like to have a range that i could shoot 1k at, and be able to get some practice in also. evidently i can't do that at this range, am i right or wrong??

I was a member at Bayou Rifles until I moved to Las Vegas in May, 2007.

I'm sorry that you feel you were treated poorly at one of our matches. I don't want to come across as overly hostile, but Bayou Rifles is a private rifle and pistol club. As a result, there is no public access except to shoot a match or when visiting with a member; nor would I or any other paying member expect that there will ever be - its a private club. If the public could come in to practice and shoot matches, there would be little, if any, incentive to join.

Since I have been to the pistol range in Addicks exactly twice, my comments are directly only to the Juliff rifle range. We open our club to the public at least 3-4 times a month for public matches, including Highpower, Palma, F-Class, and more that I do not participate in. Anyone can come to shoot these matches for a nominal fee. You don't need to be a member to shoot in our matches.

As to practicing on teh 1,000 yard practicing, even members are struggling on that issue.

Bayou has a practice / shooting "schedule" that gives certain yardlines priority for practice before noon everyday of the week, including weekends. Priority means that if you show up you can tell folks shooting a different yardline to stop so that you can shoot the priority line. The "long range" 600 yard to 1,000 yard line has priority on either Thursdays or Fridays from 9:00am until noon. (I can't remember the new schedule and it changed at the beginning of 2008).

If there is no scheduled priority line, like in the afternoons and before 9:00am, then whoever gets there first controls the line until they leave or someone else shows up that has priority. If no one else is there, you can shoot whatever yardline you want. I suggest any day of the week, including weekends, after 1:30pm. When I wanted to practice from the 600 or 1,000 yardlines, that was when I showed up; rarely did I ever have to contend with anyone shooting on the rifle lines.

There are plenty of members who want and are asking for more 1,000 yard access to practice, but the club is trying to balance the needs of all of its membership, including the numerous highpower shooters that frequently use the 200 and 300 yardlines for practice. I was not alone in actively lobbying that at least one weekend day a month be dedicated to 1,000 yard practice - since most folks work during the week and the designated practice day is not available to them. As the number of F-Class and palma members increase, the probability of increasing practice time also increases. I can tell you that I was not alone in telling the Board that I had joined so that I could use the 1,000 yard range. Since I could not practice on that range - the value of my membership was diminished, meaning I was able to use that range the same amount of time as a non-member. My pespective is that it will take time to get more practice time on the "long Range," but the club is slowly getting there. The club spent a ton of cash building that range, now they need to make more efficient use of it.

Like I said above, I don't want to come across as overly hostile, but Bayou Rifles is a private club. I understand that lots of folks do not live near the Juliff range - neither did I; my commute was over 50 miles. If someone lives in Northwest Houston and wants to shoot long range they have few choices. Unless something changes in the future - not very likely - they can either go to American Shooting Center and shoot the 600 yardline, go to the Impact Zone and shoot something much shorter then 600 yards, or find someone who owns land and will let them shoot. From my perspective, none of them are a very good option.

That having been said I do not think the club will ever give non-members access to practice, except for scheduled practice days prior to a large regional or state-wide match, I would certainly vote against it.

Sourdough,

I'm sorry to hear you walked away from the range without a good feeling. I joined the club last may and have been attending the 1K and 600 yard matches very regularly. In fact I am now a match director of the 300/600 yard matches. I don't know who you talked with but I can tell you that I was welcomed with open arms and can say I feel privlidged to be shooting with some of the finest marksmen and gentleman in the state of Texas.

Jeff is right. We are a private club. We do however open our gates to non members for every scheduled match we run for a very small fee. That is a lot more than can be said for other private clubs. There are a lot of people who live to far away to justify joining but still want to compete and we open our gates to them. We even include them in our cash prizes and award them with club record certificates. What more could you ask for ?

I know what more you could ask for..... To use our facilities for free. You know it is pretty hot here in Texas and I would like to take a dip in a pool every once in awhile but I can't justify the cost and up keep of a pool so can I just come over to your house and use yours .......

By the way Sourdough, the cost of membership is only $140 per year. We practice at 600 and 1000 yards every Tuesday and Friday from 9am to 12. I am there every Friday and we have approx 6 shooters every Friday.

We have been trying to establish a sanctioned, 1,000 yard bench rest club near the Houston area. So far we have not been able to find a range but have not given up. Our website is www.texas1000br.com, feel free to visit the site and make suggestions. We need to find an existing range that will allow us to use their facility or find a land owner we can lease from and build a range. The interest has been strong, we just need to find a range and get things going.
