i am wanting to feed my BR habit with a new CF rifle. i currently shoot only RF. which would you chose and why. i can buy a new Savage in 6br ready to go or a used gun in 6ppc or BR just the same. not sure which one to get. i know BR brass can be had easily and PPC brass used to through Sako. not sure what happened there. i'm not opposed to doing the 6ppc even if i have to faorm cases etc. (been reloading for 20 years) i just want some input.

TIA, nemo

If its accuracy you seek then...

6 PPC is the most accurate caliber in the world at 100-300 yards, its a little bit of work but well worth it! What is the purpose of the rifle?

Check these out for pretty complete discussions on both cartridges: http://www.6mmbr.com/6ppc.html and http://www.6mmbr.com/6mmbr.html. It all boils down to the type of shooting you're going to pursue. Art

Nemo,
Pick up a used 6ppc Bench gun(with a 3" forend).Check the classifieds,1200-1600 should get you somethin' shootable. If you can't find anything, one of us can hook you up with somebody with an expendable rifle.

If your shooting 100-300 yards 6ppc would be the best choice.
If your shooting 300 plus yards then the 6br would be favored.
If your shooting for score then 30br would be favored
Some actions (ie; Stiller and some others) bolt face will accept 6ppc, 6br, and 30 br, here you only have to change barrels for the different calibers. I wish to part with a new
Stiller-Diamondback (6ppc barreled) listed in the classifieds, accepting offers.
Just some thoughts not knowing what type of shooting you wish to persue.

the rifle will have purpose other than to bring me joy for a bit. maybe after i get to know it i might try some matches. St.louis bench rest is less than an hour from me so i got that option always. i just want to wet my feet but dont want caliber to limit my fealings. i know 6 rules the world inside of 300 so that is most likely what i'll go with.

When you say BR, are you talking about a Rifle that will be used to go to the range with your friends, sit down, shoot some small groups, and have a good time?? We on this Forum refer to this as benchrest with a minor "b". It can be a very satisfying endevour, and the 6BR is certainly up to that task.

If you are talking about going to matches and competing,, particularilly at the Registered Match level, we refer to that as Benchrest with a Capitol "B".

There is a difference. You can build an extremely accurate Rifle in 6BR. The accuracy capability of the 6BR will amaze most shooters.

But, for competition, it does leave a little on the table when compared heads up with a 6PPC. That little bit is why you see very few 6BR's on the line at Matches, and multitudes of 6PPC's.

My advice to most shooters is for anything short of Benchrest Competition, (GROUP), go with the BR. But, if you really are serious about shooting Benchrest, especially the kind as represented on this Forum, go with a 6PPC.

Incidentally, if you do build a 6PPC, forget about all of that Sako Brass cr-p. 99 percent of all 6PPC Shooters use the LAPUA 220 Russian as the parent case. All you have to do is neck turn it, (if required in your chamber), and fireform it. It's no big deal. This simple operation is performed thousands of times each year by dedicated shooters all over the World.......jackie

why is the .30br better for score. i take it you guys shoot best line? i shoot ARA rimfire and it is worst line scoring. what about the .22 BR? anything on the .22 PPC? i know lots of questions but that is how we learn. i will shut up and listen now.

The 30BR

is incredibly accurate and punches a .308 diameter hole. Best edge scoring, otherwise no one would shoot anything but a .22 or smaller if as accurate. It's the best tool for the score shooting job.

Score shooting is determined by the best edge score. Most shooters hit the 10 ring with a high freequency. To hit the 10 ring X (center dot) one has a better probability with a 30 caliber than a 243 caliber (.300 vs .243). Most match shooters have the ability to hit the 10 ring with all shots but the winner is the one who shoots the most X's. This gives a slight advantage to the 30 caliber shooter.

Thge 22 PPC and 22BR bullet is slightly more sensitive to the wind than the heavier 6BR/6PPC bullet otherwise they are very comperable. On a relative calm day the 22 caliber is thought by some to be slightly more accurate. Since most can only afford one gun for all days most favor the 6mm(243) caliber.

Just my thoughts

forget the savage and get a good used custom action equipped gun chambered in 6ppc. that way you are not undergunned before you even get started. wasting money on a gun you thought would work will only discourage you when it comes to getting the right one on the second round
