Is anyone shooting the 6.5 grendel?
What I have been reading looks very interesting but before I start shelling out green, I would like to talk to someone who has some experience with it.

6.5 Grendell

seems like i read a lot about this round at the 6br.com site..

You may find all you need there... they have lots of info regarding specific cartridges like this and most any other round for long or short range work.

Truly an amazing ctg in the AR-15 platform. I think the 6.8 SP will die because of this ctg. I have a Les Baer upper 24" with a Krieger barrel that is amazing. If you are looking for a semi-auto that you can do across the course with to 600 yards. Look no further. Buy your brass from AA also, cheapest you will find 6.5 Grendel lapua brass. As to dies, go with Neal Jones, much better than the Lee or the Redding dies. I would not be without the 6.5mm Grendel now. A good way to help beat wind drift.

I am not aware of anyone who is shooting the 6.5 Grendel for BenchRest.
long or short range.
There are better cartridges for both jobs.
Also the creator of this cartridge has copyright on it and you have to pay extra for anything with the 6.5 G label. For example all manufactures that make ammo for it pay licensing fee to Alexander arms or if you want a 6.5G reamer it is SUPPOSE to come from a licensed manufacturer.

You won't find cheaper brass for the Grendel (Lapua under 60.00 per hundred) than what you can get it from Bill Alexander. I have a licence from Bill A. Cost me a phone call to get the License. The reamers cost no more than any other reamer from JGS or Pacific. You do have to have the free licence from Bill to buy the reamers.

Thanks Ted,
What application are you using the 6.5G in?
I am using the AR platform and playing with competitive shooting. I was at our cities Police range the other day and the SWAT guys helped me with some of the finer points but they don't shoot like anyone here. With what I have been reading, they (SWAT) would do well to spend some time with you guys and learn to maximize the potential of their bolt guns.
My little puny AR was grouping way better than their Tactical bolt guns.
I would like to talk more about loading specifics of the 6.5 with you if you don't mine I will send you an email later.

6.5 Grendel for Benchrest

Bob White has used this for benchrest in the past. I believe he has met up with the same obstacle that those of us who have been trying to us the 6.5 BR have found. That is the lack of suitable bullets, or more specifically, the lack of proper jackets to make good bullets. The ideal bullet for a 6.5 Grendel or BR would weigh about 80 to 88 grains. In order to make these bullets a jacket length of .900 to .940 would be needed. The only manufacturer we have for true benchrest quality jackets at this time is J-4. I have spoken to Eric Stecker at Berger/J-4 and he indicated a desire to provide these jackets, however they have more pressing issues at this time and other projects have higher priority. He has assured me that they will eventually make them, but doesn't know when. Until then anything having to do with 6.5 Benchrest is nearly at a standstill. We are waiting with baited (baded?, bated?, oh well:confused:) breath.

The Tomball Gun Club (Zion Road) will be hosting a Varmint for Score
match the first Sunday in Oct 10-5.

Bring your AR to the match and join us.There are several others
that are competing with AR platform rigs.

There will free food served and a good time will be had by all.

I will echo what Vic said. You did not state which part of TX you live, but we have a great Match at Tomball, the last one coming up Oct 5. Your AR will either be in Factory class, or modified class, depending how many mods you have. Probably Modified.
You will not be in competition with all out Benchrest Rifles, which compete in the "Benchrest" class. As Vic said, we already have a couple of AR's in Modified, one took home a trophy this past week end.
Come out and join us. You willhave a great time.......jackie

Question for Jackie

Jackie,

Do you have the AR's shoot single shot or do you let them load up the magazine? How do you handle the "show bolts..."?

These are club matches, while we stress safety above all else, I tell the AR shooters to just load single shot, and place a flag, or something else that can be seen while not allowing the bolt to go forward, in the chamber well while not at the line.
I know it is not abiding for some "Benchrest Purist", (which I am one), but I am trying to make it to where the AR shooters can come out, have a good time, and compete.
I will get a full dose of "Benchrest Analitity" this week end at Seymour, where we will be shooting 10 shot Unlimited........jackie

Thanks, Jackie. At my local club, we also encourage guns of various types during the winter when the IBS season is over. We've never had an AR (that I know of) show up, so I was curious how you do it.

Good luck with the big gun. Do you have some pictures you can show us.

Adrian and Jackie

I'm sure that you know this but it only takes the shooter pushing out one pin to pull the bolt and carrier out of an AR. Takes about two seconds. I still like the bolts out rule and think it should be applied to AR's. Sooner or later, the different shooting orgs will have to address AR rifles. I'm not a big fan of them but there are a lot of them out there and some will really shoot!---Mike Ezell

I shoot a wildcat called the 257TED. I form this cartridge using 6.5G brass. I get the brass from Alexander Arms and they sell it for a pretty good price.
IT is made by Lapua and just as good as the 220 russian brass we use for the 6PPC.
I have won a few club VFS matches using this round and the 88 grain BIB 257 bullet.
I haven't done well in any group matches with it but .....I have a new 1/12 Bartlein barrel that is going onto a Viper in an Edge Stock that I got from Bob for about 59 bucks. So I will give it another try at group shooting.
There is another shooter on this board named WalkerTXRanger who had a Speedy F-CLass gun in 6.5G but I think he gave up on it for long range shooting. I know that several guys tried it for across the course high-power shooting but gave up on it because of lack of case capacity.
There is a site http://65grendel.com/ that deals in the Grendel and all of those guys think it is the best thing since stick powder.
The problem is ....it was designed as an assault rifle cartridge but those guys are trying to make it into a 1000 yard sniper cartridge and a dozen other things.
It is a decent little cartridge and might be a good upgrade from 5.56 and with the right bullets maybe even a good VFS round.

about 3 years ago we had a fellow show up at our State long range championship with an AR. He had a bird cage shell catcher and he loaded singly. He kept a yellow NRA style chamber flag in at all times other than between commands and he shot pretty well. He was allowed to shoot that way. I don't think you'll see a plethora of AR's in conventional BR...they are just not competitive. --Greg
