Newbie, so sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place. Anyway, I had this idea of necking down a 7mm ultra mag to 6.5. After looking at the Shilen website, I see they have a 6.5-300 ultra mag. This ought to be a screamer. Anyone know anything about it (stats). I've been thinking about getting one for whitetail and also getting into competition shooting. Think it would beat me up too bad to compete with?

Yeh, there was a memo out a while back that stated that White Tail Deer had become immune to the 260 Remington, and might even shrug off a 6.5x55 or a .264 Win Mag.

So, I would think a 6.5 Ultra Mag would be the hot ticket.

Seriously, for Competition using such a case, you need to post this on our 1000 yrd Forum. There is a wealth of knowledge over there about large capacity chamberings such as what you are asking about........jackie

publius,
I'm a long range competitor and have gone after whitetails at various ranges with speed demons like you are talking about. Jackie is right in that these questions belong on the 1000yd section of this message board. But the long range hunting aspect is best kept to the specialized sites that deal with that topic also. That is a political hotbutton subject. Just warning you is all.

I will briefly give you an idea of the practicallity of a 6.5-300 Ultra Mag here so you don't have to type this over on the Long Range section if that is all your looking for. Believe me, I love to experiment and speed is neat to play with and I've done it. I own both 6.5-300 Weatherbys (6.5-300 WWH) and 6.5-300 Win Mags for several years. They are not even close to being practical for any form of competition except who can produce the highest numbers on the chronograph. I shoot a 6.5x55AI in LG class for 600 and 1000yd BR competitions. It's not all about speed in the BR game.
But even if you wanted to build a 6.5-300 UM for fun and to hunt with, I would still have to say that for practical terms it is really overbore for the 6.5 caliber. My 6.5-300 WWH is about as far as you want to go to get any type of load workup and a somewhat of a practical barrel life out of it before it's time to rethroat it.

I'm not saying not to do it.... but it's like using a 800hp nitrous fed 500+C.I. motor to drive to the grocery store with. By the time you get where your going, you out of fuel and probably need a new clutch and brakes. But.... nobody else will have one like it! ;)

So its all in what you are looking for and expect out of it. But this isn't even close to being competitive in any organized long range matches. Been there done that.

I figured I was posting in the wrong forum,(sorry) but thanks for the info on the cartridge. The info you provided matched my suspicions. Incidentally, the 6.5x55 is my favorite cartridge for the political hotbutton use.
