50 year old cmp stocks

you better watch that gambler!! you'll have to put advertising on the side!! you could be the smiling bob of the range!!!! you may have to stroke the stock after each shot and if the wood stays hard for more than 4 hours you might have to take it to your smith:D!!!

no joke the stocks look good. yep there is other things to make stocks out of, but nothing comes close to looking as good as wood. no matter how they are painted, wood takes the cake. with a rifle bedded right and the wood sealed it is just as good as anything else.

DSCN1064.jpg bottom one is a commercial and was bedded, I think it was part of the air force. will finish it in a day or two.

i like the top one!! the grain in it looks great. i bet ol tom will be tickled pink when you finish his up for him.

i passed on a 52 one time because it wasn't dovetailed or drilled for a scope. it had a side mounted peep sight on it. it was marked usn on it. i more than likely pasted up a really great shooter because there was no way to mount a scope.

Martin,

I count at least 4 stocks. How did you come by so many? Do you have the guns to go with the stocks?

Concho Bill

Bill I lucked out with these. have 2 USMC, 2 commercial, 2 heavy barreled and bought a new barreled action this summer thats going in a jtr bench stock. cmp was good to me for sure. all those stocks have a home. 4 are all original 3 have jewell triggers.

If any of you need a 40X stock Whittaker Guns in West Louisville Ky. had one the last time I was there two weeks ago. And was not a bad looking stock.

DSCN1066.jpg this is how they came from the cmp, the next pic is of the upper varnished one sanded and scotts put on

DSCN1082.jpg this is the upper one in the prior picture. will take a couple days to finish. I have yet to see one that looked lousy after removing the finish. this will get one more coat of scott's then buffed and a couple coats of min wax.

DSCN1090.jpg this is the bottom one from the previous page. it had 4 gouges some .500 deep. it may not be the best but it sure ain't bad now

DSCN1094.jpg couple coats of min wax, buffed, and will be finished by monday.

DSCN1095.jpg here's the latest finished. everyone of these from cmp turned out great, all are very accurate and most were well cared for. what's interesting all were released from cmp and 4 were commercial 40x's non us marked.

Very nice!
How do you treat the dings and dents??

One of the local gun-nuts advises using "Purple Power",from an auto-parts store,to get the grime out.

this is what those last two looked like before.

look alot better now, good job marty and thank you.

the small dents just set over a humidifier that is a warming one. for the deeper gouges and where there are chunks missing from the stock, save some sanded walnut, then make a patch with carpenters wood glue. let set overnight and it's part of the stock. for the cracks a wire bread wrap gets the glue into the seam.

DSCN1115.jpg here is the side that was all chunked up. the picture is a little darker than the stock actually is. it's getting one last coat of helmsman spar and buffed.

Martin...

The 40x stock was never found to be very good for position or prone and was never accepted by many shooters. For one thing it was dimensioned for shooters with small hands. Shooters with normal or large hands could not get good finger position on trigger. This as well as the rounded shape may or may not affect it's use as a bench gun. I was wondering whether or not you have found it to be a very good stock for shooting from a bench.

DSCN1130.jpg
pacecil, this was the one rifle we were worried about. it was cobbled together and no parts matched

DSCN1133.jpg
this is the target it shot. no flags, no custom rest, used eley club was 35 degrees it is the worst of the bunch. you could compete tomorrow with all of them

pacecil, compare these 40x stocks to others, some of the comb has been removed. look where the bolt channell is, it has been reduced by about .100 then look at the rake. the angle of the rake has been lessened also. they ride the bags ok, nothing like the stith stock but better than before. unless you take some off the comb it's pretty hard not to touch the stock or you need to use really high rings.
