DSCN1051.jpg will finish this in a few days,it's amazing what's underneath the crud.

What did you use to get the crud off with? I have one of the CMP guns with a mis-matched bolt and it is extremely hard to cock. Anyone know any good 40X mechanics? I understand Gene Davis has retired.

Mine had some bolt issues until I discovered that the middle screw was a little too long, backing it out solved the problem, so I shortened it just a little and solved the problem.

DSCN1055.jpg just had to put a scope on and try. just start out with 80 grit get rid of the varnish or initial junk the 180-320 and then I put Scotts liquid gold wood preservitive and wood cleaner on. Scotts has no coloring it just makes the grain pop, then I let it set for a day or 2 then 600 grit a coat of minwax oil based poly and buff it with a very fine scouring pad. hey George ask Tomc how these things are shooting.

Boyd, one thing that stands out with cmp is their customer service. if somethings not right from a safety aspect they will repair or replace. unfotuneatly the cosmectics are what you see.

Oil Finish

Most of the CMP stockes have an Oil Finish. I use Kerosene and 000 Steel Wool to draw the oil out of the stock. You still need to get the residue from the kerosene out of the wood, but that the easy part. Use only in well ventelated area. Avoid smoking and open flame. While I'm at it, one more safety measure, do not drink the kerosene.

Clean the Bolt

Ken:
Clean the interior of the bolt. Sounds like you have a lot of gunk it the bolt. Then lube only the cock ramp and the lugs. A very light coat of Bolt Magic on the bolt body. Make sure the raceway is clean. Also check any screw that may penetrate into the raceway.

Thanks Fred. I may get a chance to play with it this weekend.

Fred j other than the USMC the hb and sb rifles are the commercial versions. only one had oil finish the others a varnish. Ken on these bolts I soak them overnight in a tray of hoppes solvent, allow to drip overnight then flush with a spray can of disc brake cleaner allow to dry then flush with zippo lighter fluid. do this to the trigger assy. works great.

those stocks look great. nothing like pretty wood on a rifle. they should shoot pretty well, at least i hope they do for you.

Thought for today

If God had wanted gunstocks made out of plastic, He wouldn't have made trees out of wood.

There you have it.

Spose next thing you're gonna tell me is that, that wood just grows on those trees.

Deep seated oil can be baked out of those stocks by putting on the dash of a closed car. That is for those of you that have access to sun and heat this time of year. The rest of us wait until July. Make sure to put something under it to catch the crud. Kerosene does work well.

Ken

Take the stock to your slop sink. Get the water HOOOTTT and use some liq dishsoap and a scrub brush all over , inc the inletted areas. Do that 3 times and you will be amazed at the black suds(crud) that is washed off it.

Thank you, that one is the 4th since christmas that was redone. 2 were excellent and 2 were outstanding. watched the history channel a couple weeks ago, a recovery for logs in the great lakes was going on. these logs had gone to the bottom and settled in the mud, a diver hooked a chain on and they hauled it out. those logs were bringinging up to $40,000 each. some had been there for over 100 years.

Martin, that stock is amazing! What a treasure, I wonder what the stocker at Remington thought as he put it on the barreled action all those years ago.

Bill, it's true that God didn't make plastic (or aluminum) trees, but still I hate the thought of losing a match just because my stock starts to sprout leaves in a drizzle and I can't see the sights. I have to stick to synthetics just to avoid that possibility!

Very good one, German. It is true that God put materials other than wood for us to use. It must be alright for us to make gunstocks out of them. However, if an extra leaf on my wood stock helps my gun to shoot better, then I can live with that.
