3rd Shot....

Ok, so i am shooting 3 shot groups for some practice and everytime my third shot kills the group. the first two always are very tight and then the third one pulls. Is this most likely user error? I find it hard to believe that this is my gun or load if it always gets the first two right.

A lot more information would help but - have you tried shots 4 and 5 to see what they do??

i am using a 28 grain n133 load with a 65 grain barts bullet. it is in a shilen barrel on a 40-x chamber. i have tried larger groups a few times and sometimes the 4th and 5th shot stay tight and other times they are spread out as well. I am shooting off a wooden bench that may have some wobble in it and I am thinking that may be part of my problem.

Tony B. told me that if it's always the same shot that goes out it's shooter error---probably gun handling.

I am using wind flags, and I am thinking that it is a combination of shooter error and the bench.

Try some 5 shot groups after all your going to have to shoot 5 in a match. Plus your fouler and clean between group.
Shoot 3-5 of these and see what happens

I have shot 5 shot groups before in a match, this 3rd shot problem is recent. I believe the next match i will be in is a 10 shot group match.

28gr is awlfully light. Go up to between 28.8 and 29.4 N133 will flip shots enough to make it look like a problem when it's light. I've only seen one lot that would shoot consistantly at that light a load....or in really cold weather.

Everytime I begin to test loads with higher powder content then the groups get progressivly worse. 28.8 was much worse then my 28 and 28.2.

Jeff, you stated you had shot 5 shot groups before and that the 3 shot problem was new.
What I am saying is since you have a problem with the 3rd shot go ahead and shoot a couple of 5 and or 6 shot groups and see what happens to the 4,5 and 6th shots. do they go back to the 1,2 place do they stick in the 3 place or do they go somewhere else?

Sometimes the 4th and 5th shot go back to the group and other times that start a new group with the third shot. Almost everytime the 3rd shot or the new group is about 1" - 2" to the right.

That's enlightning, "1"-2" to the right. I assume you are shooting at 200 yards. But still, that is a lot when shooting in non match conditions.
Could be the scope. Sure wouldn't be the first time..........jackie

About your load, Gene Beggs who owns a tunnel) once wrote that for the typical 6PPC, that accurate powder charge nodes are about 1.2 grains apart. If we look at where you are currently getting your best accuracy, and where you mentioned your accuracy is worse, as you increase your charge, I think that you may not be going up far enough. I have seen this mistake made over and over, with both powder charge, and bullet seating depth. I have made it myself. If you have a properly fitting FL die, going up in charge weight should not be a problem, although I would still recommend that you do an incremental pressure test. Something else that has not been suggested is that you have someone else shoot your rifle, to see if he has the same problem. One thing about your wobbly wooden bench, in many cases plywood gussets or rectangular shear panels can be screwed and glued to a frame, and have a major effect on its stability. This should be easy, and inexpensive. Keep us informed as to your progress.

I had a problem 2 yrs ago. The front rest had a loose screw. It move my group to the left. Just inside of the box. My fouler missed the paper a lot.
Went to check anything loose on rifle. Got through the first 2 groups. Figured out what it was in the middle of the 3rd group. This screw was 1-2 flats loose. Group moved 3.5".
Check your rest, ask someone else to shoot it, And find a new bench.
I was that someone else, once. A guy was having problems. So I shot his rifle. His rest was the light weight Sinclair. Which he used for rimfire.
I said the rifle shoots great. Get a new rest. Guess what? He got a new rest. And is loving it.

It sounds like it's double grouping.....bigger than I have ever seen but is a good sign the scope is going south. The only leupold scopes that I have had that moved would do the same thing but only about 1/4-3/8 inch. Will drive a person crazy. Changed scopes...problem went away...put the scope back on...problem back. When I have gotten them back from leupold, they always worked fine after being fixed. I don't know about recently but they used to send out a repair report, mine always stated where they found the problem, what they did to correct it and if they did any upgrades.
