which one is more effective on hunting deer size game at around 200 yd range in a short barrel? (20-22" long)

30BR uses 125gr bullet and 6BR uses 80gr bullet.

I know there are many better cartridge for hunting deer, but just wondering.

thanks

Don't know...never could get the Deer to hold still long enough for a good agg...

2950 is 2950

There is every reason to believe that a 125g bullet launched at 2950 FPC wouldn't be as deadly as one launched from, say a 300 Savage at a slower speed. Been a heck of a lot of deer, moose, elk and whatever one can think of killed with a 300 Savage.

I like the idea of a fatter bullet to make a bigger hole and the extra weight. I know there have been plenty of deer killed with 6 MM's and even 22's but I would go for the 30 every time. ( If a 7 MM wasn't one of the choices)

I don't know how well these short cases feed from magazines though.

I have one Grandson with a 30BR and another with a 6BR. One uses 125GR and the other 87gr. Neither has had a problem with one shot kills on hogs or deer. As they get older, maybe we will go with something larger.

Shot placement and accuracy trumps just about everything else. I doubt you'll see 2,950fps from a 30BR loaded with 125's but that combo would kill a deer out to 200 yards as would a 6mmBR. For the 6BR, Nosler 95 grain Partitions or 85X's would be a better choice. There's been truck loads of Whitetail killed with .22RF and Bows & Arrows, they are a tough little creature ;) Take your pick and be happy.

Butch, are they single shots? I was wondering what Pete's question was. How do they feed from a magazine?

That said, I've hunted most my life with a single shot.

Actually 2950 fps is pretty much the standard load with 118's, and easily attainable with 125's

I was just comparing it to a .308 I had. It shot the 125's at around 3,000 fps. 2,950fps with 118's or 125's from a 6BR case is respectable, I'da never thunk it.

Straight from 6BR

Velocities and Efficiency by Al Nyhus
Using either N130 or H4198, with 112-125gr bullets, peak velocities will be in the 2950-3020 range. 30BRs seem to have multiple accuracy nodes, but 2980-3020 fps seems to favored by most tuners at this time. The 30BR's outstanding efficiency is what allows those impressive velocities. If you compare the capacity/bore ratios of the shortened .308 Win wildcats used in Hunter Benchrest shooting (45.0 grains and above) you'll find they have almost the same ratio as does the 6PPC. It's no surprise then that the 30BR is even more efficient, both because of its capacity/bore ratio and because of the case design and flash hole/primer configuration.

This is definitely one chambering I'll have to have one day. I never gave it much attention, my bad.

Where they are often shooting at running game, single shots aren't the Hot Setup.

If I lived where deer languish for folks to choose which ones they want to shoot, a single shot would be perfect.

My father, old and grey, would still clobber me for shooting at a running deer.

I'm not that quick to shoot, well, I might take a crack... depends how big it is...LOL

That's the differance between (shooting ) and hunting deer, hunting is stalking your prey,or placing yourself in the position to take that 1 shot .Shooting is waiting for them to run past.......LOL

I am too old and crippled to stalk. I set in a comfortable elevated blind. This may not agree with some folks thinking, but I ain't gonna walk around and get shot by some other fool.

It agrees with my way of thinking.

Floundering through the woods, invading their space, chasing deer and wounding them does not agree with my way of thinking.

I don't know how well these short cases feed from magazines though.

My sako feeds 6BRs and anything but 55's, the best being 80-90 hunting type round nose bullets with no problems. Minor tweaks if theres a problem- my rem 700 in BR was a bit finicky- so I glued a follower into it..
I shot a couple of deer 8 or so years ago with 6x47 from 150 to 225 yards and barnes bullets, whomp- down on the spot.
30 might be a better choice, but I'd go with the 6BR!

Good 6mm deer bullets that stabilize in a 1 in 14" twist barrel are hard to find.

Short 21", fat, 5 pound benchrest barrels are heavy and do not get all the possible velocity of a 26" 2.5 pound barrel.
