30BR vs 30AR

Is there any advantage to either of these over the other? Anyone tried a 30AR in a bolt gun?

In my opinion, for what it's worth, in a bolt gun the 30 RAR is squeezed out between the 30 BR (6BR necked up) and the 30x47 (6.5 x 47 Lapua necked up). In both, super high quality Lapua brass is readily available. That is not the case for the 30 RAR.

You are spot on. if Lapua made 30AR brass people would be trying it especially if as you say it is between the 30BR and 30x47 in case capacity.

the 30 ar

I was very impressed with the 30ar when it first tested in the rem. ar type rifles, many good stories in magazines & forums were published. So, i called pt&g to get a reamer & headspace gages, plus a brux barrel, xp-100 action & an Edge target stock but could not locate any brass. Soon i found 2 dist. that listed the 30 ar in their inventory of brass by remington. Well i waited & still waiting for brass a year later, so i bought some remington factory loaded rounds just for the brass & still waiting for new brass. I shoot the 30 br & have alot of fun punching paper but the 30ar should have the edge over the br in performance IMO. As for the 30ar rifle build, it's been put on hold untill i can locate a supply of new brass. ---------take care Craig

how do you define "performance?"

the 30 ar

the performance of the 30ar over the 30br is from a hunting pov, for targets I use 118 bib bullet with the 30br, which i built 2 for my son & me. Each has a #5 brux barrel & are also used for hunting, so i did the research on the 30ar & compared the to the 30br using a 120 - 125gr & h-4198 & the 30ar ( according to the numbers) shoots a little faster & with less drop at 300 yds. IMO the 30ar should be a great little LW sporter or target rifle if i could only find brass PS. just checked the 2 suppliers that listed the 30 ar brass & they have removed that item from the on-line catalog. Hope this info helps you & i am still looking for for the 30ar brass take care- Craig

...and if you had gone with a 30x47, you would have more case capacity than the 30AR and you would have great brass readily available.

hello SG----30ar

SG you are right about the 30x47 lapua, my friend built one using a 1-14 twist shilen & crows are not safe at 800 yds. As for me, i am willing to wait a-little longer to see if some 30ar brass shows-up. The 30x47 is good on its own, but i already shoot the 6x47 & 6.5x47-- both are great. Google-up the 30ar and read up on the external ballistics & you will see some advantages but i suppect this little cartridge has no future simply because of the success of the 30br at 100-300 yd. br matches. ------------- take care

The 30 BRX or 30 Dasher would also compete with a 30 AR and have Lapua brass. The 30 AR is going to go the way of the 30 TC. A solution hunting for a problem.

hello SG----30ar

SG you are most likely rght but i already have 400 rounds of factory loaded ammo ???? maybe the tulsa show, someone needs ammo for a semi-auto, who knows, the 22br is looking better all the time, another Hot Rod in a small package---------take care

It the same as a shortened 30-284:

The parent case is a .284; fat, rebated case. I have seen posts on here by lads who have blown the shoulders forward enough to get to the HR volume and love the result. 284 brazsss could probably be cut back and used to mae cases. I have two sets of Neil Jones forming dies to do this. I would gladly part with one set of them :). I have shot a slightly longer cased version of this and there are a few others being shot out west; a Myers version, I believe.

Please remember that the Remington Brass has a rim that won't fit into a 308 bolt face. Having said that cases can be made from 284 brass (large primer) and 450 bushmaster (small primer).

Both have shot well but I opend up my bolt now and the remington works just fine. I will say the 30 RAR has more powder options and greater selection of bullets.

the 30 ar

jerry, you are on the mark; the rim dia. = .487 & the base of the case = .497 sized & .503 fired & yes you have to open the bolt face on a standard rem bolt. take care
