I just bought a reamer from a fella and i dont think its what i need. I need a reamer for a 30BR. I had a fella contact me stating he had one so i payed him the money. When i got the reamer is said 30BR rem with a date of 10/94 I am assuming this isnt the reamer i want or need for current Lapua brass in a 30BR. Any info on this? The fella that sold it to me didnt seem to know much about it. had he told me it said 30Br Remington i probably wouldn't have purchased it. What do i actually have here? thanks Lee

Lee, you should contact JGS for their info http://jgstools.com/mainarea.html ... in their caliber list I do not see a 30 BR Lapua listed, only 30 BR Rem ... only knowing the specs will tell if you really have a .300" neck reamer based on the Lapua case (mine is called "Henrickson").

If it is that old, there is a possibility that it is not ground to fit Lapua 6BR brass. The base might be too tight.

Also, the freebore might be on the long side, zoer is the number everybody uses now because of the short light weight 30 cal bullets.

You can ream a dummy chamber and see how big it cuts in the web. If it was ground for Remington or Norma Brass, there is a good chance it is too tight. .........jackie

As a guess, you might have to shorten your case necks just a bit. R.G. Robinett, who still uses 7mm BR brass ('cause he has a bunch & is thrifty) would have no problem with it, unless, as suggested, there s too much freebore -- i.e.over about .010. My guess its the other way - I used one (maybe) similar to what you described for years.

Lee, just make up a barrel "widget" out of a piece of barrel stub. That should tell ya all ya need to know about the neck length and freebore with just a little thinkin' and measurin' thrown in.--Mike Ezell

Only thing is if i use it then i cant send it back to the fella. With out his permission anyway. i sent him a e-mail and i am waiting to hear back. he seems like a good dude so i hope he will be able to offer up more info. I didnt even know they were shooting 30BR back in 1994? Never thought to ask about what year it was made. Fella said he had a 30Br reamer with a 330 neck made by JGS so i figured it was what i needed?? Lee

It does measure .330 but i have no idea of the freebore. i will make a phone call on monday. thanks Lee

I think freeborn is the least of your problems, this reamer is likely too small at the base. Get a print from JGS and check it out. If you have the option to return it you probably want to do so.

I may be stuck with it just dont know. I guess i learned something here on this one. I just didnt know there were any variants to this chambering. i guess i didnt ask the proper questions?? Or maybe someone just slid there junk on to me? We will see. thanks Lee

I'd go mike a new piece of Rem 7mm BR brass and a new Lapua 6mm BR piece, but as Dick points out, it's the reamer that counts. IIRC the cases are close enough to the same -- I use both in my .30BR. However, since all the right-thinking folk don't like it, you'd likely be happier sending it back, if you can. I have a not-very-much-used Henriksen .30 BR reamer, so am not interested; someone else might be.

Edit:

If you want, I'll go mike the brass tomorrow.

I have been told the Cast Bullet guys had been shooting cartridges similar or even identical to the 30 BR for many years before it became popular with the Jacketed bullet guys in fact I quote Randy Robinette from his article at http://www.6mmbr.com/30BR.html

"The origin of the .30BR is somewhat murky. In truth, the 30BR is much the same as a .308x1.50", or a .308 Barnes. Those cartridges have been around for decades. They were primarily used for "cast bullet" cartridges or handgun silhouette chamberings."

Skeetlee, Find out what the specs are , If it's for 7BR brass NK'D up I may be interested (I've got a ton of it) PM me or call (507) 437-8313

Hi Lee,

I bought a 'stock' .30BR Rem reamer from JGS a few years ago. Print # 3507. It has a .333" nk, and 0.080" FB. 0.4714" base (0.200" from bolt face). I have used a rifle chambered with this and Lapua brass for the last 3 years - no issues. I have had great accuracy with the rifles chambered with this reamer. Have won our National short F-class with it for the last 2 years running (sorry 6PPC fans.....), and another export customer is winning the hell out of every comp he enters with his.

Re-check your neck dimensions - or it could have been a custom grind.

Cheers, D.
