30BR Free recoil

All,
I went to the range this morning before the wind started and tried to shoot my 30BR free recoil style. First you need to keep your nose out of your shooting. Two you have to have your shoulder just right to catch the rifle as it recoils back. I think the free recoil style has possibilities. Out of 15 shots I had 10 X’s (100 yd), I don’t think that is bad for the first time. Does anyone out there shoot free recoil style with their 30BR?

30cal Recoil

I don't shoot a 30BR but I do shoot free recoil with a 13.5lb 30ppc and recoil is a non issue with this platform. I'd venture to say the recoil is a little more than a 10.5lb 6ppc.

Now the 10.5lb 30BR is a different animal in regards to recoil and has substancial kick. I have shot Jackie Schmidt's 10.5lb 30BR and it definetly gets your attention. :eek:

I shoot my 30br free recoil and i have done well while doing so. I sold all my rifles and went with BAT actions so i will be starting over with my 30br. I still plan to try the free recoil technique though. My last 30br was on a lawton short action and a mcmillan bruno edge stock. the rifle shot really well but by the end of the match my knuckle on my right pointer fingure would be bleeding. The knurling on the lawton bolt would eat my skin after a couple targets. Also with that action i couldnt feed a round with just the bolt. I had to push the cartridge all the way into the chamber then shut the bolt. I hope the new BAT shoots as well as the lawton did, and i am sure it will. I went with a BAT 3lug and with the coned bolt feeding should be very smooth. All i need now is the stock, and i will be ready to roll. I really enjoy Varmint for score and i have high hopes for the new rig.
I am recoil sensitive anyway but the 30BR with a recoil pad isnt to bad at 13.5 pounds. I have never shot a 10.5 pound 30br but i can only imagine it would be a bit of a kicker. The hunter class score game also has my attention, as those guys can really shoot and only using a 6 power scope. I give those guys all kinds of credit, I like a good challenge. That will have to be down the road a ways. Those hunter class rifles are only 10 pounds. I have watched Ron hoene beat most guys with his hunter rifle with a 6 power scope and the varmint guys were using 36x scopes. Its quite the game, in my opinion! I am using a Hall 13.5 lbs with a 36X Weaver and a 2X multiplier for 100 yds. I’m shooting 118 gr. bullet that I make. I know that you have to get your nose out of the way or the scope will whack it. I have been shooting with forward pressure, but just wanted to try free recoil to see what it would do.

I shot my HV 30br with free recoil. I agree that it has to be perfectly balanced to make it feel just right. Ronnie Long built both my hvy 30br's and they are perfectly balanced. Even with a different scope on each one.
 
I shoot a 30HBR in the Hunter class with free recoil. Use a 136gr BIB bullet in front of 42.8gr of 135. The recoil is still very manageable and gives me a lot better results than when I was holding on.

I do shoot my 30BR free recoil. Or at least, I am not touching anything.

I can feel the Rifles butt just barely grazing my shoulder, you have to really concentrate so as to not get into it as you let the round go.

My HV weighs about 13.3 pounds, it is a breeze. The Sporter at 10.5 pounds does get a little grating after a while. I really do not enjoy shooting it that much.

I have torn my right shoulder rotator cuff twice and dislocated it ten times, so I was reluctant to shoot a 30BR. Then, a friend had me try a few shots with his, and it did not bother me. I had a 10.5 lb. LV rifle built using a Nesika action and short barrel in 30BR. I do not shoot free recoil. I lightly touch the butt plate against my shoulder and keep my eye back until I see a full circle before squeezing the trigger, thus no problem.
 
I shoot my 30BR free recoil and Randy Robinett has told me that he also shoots his 30BR free recoil. I have had no problems with this method. I shoot my 6PPC the same way.
 
I shoot my 10.5# and my 13.5# 30-30's free recoil most of the time. I leave about a 1/2" gap between the butt and my shoulder. In the light gun, I only shoot free recoil with loads around 3000 fps and under. With the heavy, I have shot free recoil with a 118gr bullet at 3300 fps with much success.

Good on you Micheal. But on the other hand you is a young buck. Just you wait until you get a dose of arthur-itis in that shoulder, then you will be looking at them Past recoil pads and such. I was at the range today with my 13 lb 30BR and shot about 75 rounds. I cut a piece from a mouse pad, about 3/16" thick, glued it to the butt plate and use a 1/2 Past recoil pad. 75 rounds, both free recoil and pinned to the stop made no difference. No aches or pains tonight. Might as well been shooting a 22rf. I really don't see much difference in the 30BR with the pads and a 6ppc without.

I shoot my 30BR free recoil as well. Takes a day of practice to get used to it but shooting "heads up" definitely improved my shooting scores.. I am able to pay more attention to the wind flags and more importantly, to how well my rifle sits in the bags. Proper setup of the rifle on the front rest and rear bag is crucial to shooting well from free recoil. Before shooting like this, I was woefully unaware how poor my setup was.
