308 neck tension

Bnhpr

I've been shooting winchester brass in my 308, with good results with new brass. (155 Berger vld's, 48 gr Varget)

Once I FL resize once, with a RCBS FL die, my neck tension increases to the point where the new POI is 1" higher at 100 yards.

Why higher? I don't know, but they are definitely tighter necks, because, I can feel it when I seat the bullets in the resized brass.

What die should I be using? Any opinions on what my neck size should be after resizing?

There are sooo many dies to chose from???

Time to buy a Bushing type die

You need a bushing type full length sizing die...Redding makes an excellent die for this purpose...The reason is that you will need to resize/reduce the neck tension on you bullets and by using a bushing that will only size your necks of your brass by .003"...
You should measure the diameter of your necks on your fired cases and order several bushing that are smaller by .002,.003,.004" and experiment with each of them...
You can get an idea of how much your current sizer die is reducing the neck dimension by measuring a piece of brass before and after sizing...
Also if you can afford it buy some Lapua .308 brass, it is the best of the best...You will see much improved accuracy on the average..;)

I do have some Lapua brass, but I have much more Winchester, and I find that the winchester, when new, shoots as well as the Lapua.

I know this is blasphemy here, but it's my observation.

Both shoot .250 groups in this rifle with good bullets and technique.

I just made up

70 pieces of winchester for my 30-47. I have fireformed a couple of them and they look great. I have shot Winchester 300 Savage brass for several years in my 30-44's and they seem just fine to me.

I am not knocking Lapua brass but I am saying , from my experience, the Winchester seems fine to me.

lapua vs winchester

I just finnished prepping 100 Lapua in .223 Rem and 100 Winchester in 222Rem, primer pockets, length, neck turned, I had to though out 3 winchesters couldn't remove brass when inside deburing primer pockets, another 2 for non center primer pockets, weighed the lapua,s after max differance in weight 1/10gr, winchesters 1.5gr differance, did all lapua brass in half time it took to do winchester brass.
for me Lapua is by far better brass and will give you way better results than winchester

Your right, and I can't argue. But with the new brass (minus a few culls) the end result has been the same.

For me, I think my technique is more of an issue than the load.

Thanks for the advice on the dies, I was thinking along those lines, and you have confirmed my thoughts.
