I'm getting ready to buy a barrel for a 30 br.My question is on rifling not twist rate.Any one tried the canted lands type or 5R type of rifling ,are their any advantages over regular rifling. Also what type do you use.
Thanks Rudy Manuel

I might rub some the wrong way by saying this, but most of these variations in the actual shape of the lands is simply a ploy to individulize a particular manufacturers barrels. In theory, it all looks good, but in the end has no affect on the one thing that a 30BR shooter would be interested in, that being ultimate accuracy or agging capability at 100-200 yards.
I use Krieger Barrels, they are cut rifled with ordinary old square lands. They shoot VERY good. But I feel safe in saying that any of the major Custom Barrel makers can furnish you with a barrel that is up to the task......jackie

Rudy,
Our barrels are cut rifled with the 5R land profile. Ken Livengood holds the current world record for the 100 200 300 yd agg with 750 39X and he also shot I believe 4 250 25X's last summer with our barrels. I also believe there were 8 250 25X's shot with our barrels last year. As Jackie said there are alot of good barrel makers today you just have to decide which one you want, they are all capable of winning.

I'm going to echo Jackie on this one. I've shot a couple of Broughton (North Manufacturing) 5-R profile barrels in long-range rifles, and they shoot just fine. Mine, and a couple others I've known, seem to let you use more powder & get a higher velocity without excessive pressure.

I have another "profiled groove" barrel that has the same characteristic (and shoots fine), but certain bullets can't be jammed; you just get a complete circle of contact. Since Rock Creek has posted, I'll allow it isn't a Rock Creek. It is also a 6.5x.270 AI; hardly a .30 BR.

In short, pluses and minuses. I don't thing the increase in velocity is that important, nice when you can get it, but hardly necessary & not always useful.
