30 br and powder burn rate

Dave, the newer lots of 130 are slower than 4198 extreme, and are great in the 30BR. I had 2 barrels last year that wouldn't shoot 4198, no matter what I did with them. They were both very competitive with N130. I have 2 barrels this year that don't care if I fill them with 130 or 4198. There are few shooters that use 322 extreme, but one of the best used it to shoot 3 25X aggs last year...it does indeed work. To add another powder to the list, fill the case full of 8208...I'll bet you'll be smiling.

I actually shot a .30 BR in a rail for a bit. 24-inch barrel. It shot best with IMR 4227 (old, pre-1990. Left over from a .32-20 Contender pistol I shot). It also like it hot, I remember leading the SER 300 yard regional for a couple of matches. Last two in the aggregate, I was pounding the bolt open. Not good.

A .30 BR HV of mine has a 25-inch barrel (barrel blocked, Hunter-profile barrel though). That one prefers N-130 over 4198 with the 118 10-ogive, but 4198 with the 112 7-ogive. Go figure.

I never could get 322 to work, but Randy Robinett did.

You could also try Reloader 7, and at the other end, even VV N-530.

Not better or worse..just different.

What I meant about the H322 Extreme is that in my 30BR's it acts 'slow'...for lack of a better term. In my 22BR and 6BR, it acts the same as the earlier pre-Extreme Hodgden H322. When I try the pre-Extreme H322 in my 30BR, it seems 'faster' than the new stuff.

In HBR sized .30 cases (45.5 of water and above), the H322 Extreme is being loaded well past what used to wreck cases with the pre-Extreme stuff.

Good shootin'. -Al
