has anyone shot 3 groove barrels in short range BR.
how did they work out..
my barrel maker sent me a 3 groove barrel instead of a 6groove this is why im asking...
this barrel will be going on a 6ppc..

Used the heck out of them in Hunter Class. 30 caliber stuff. I mostly use all 3 groove in most of my builds, No complaints yet!

Some of the 3 groovers have been quite good. Understand one thing however, seating depths may very well be quite different as the pressure curve from 4 or 6 lands to 3 means they build pressure slower.

Tim
Will the lack of pressure building properties be a problem in itself, with just 3 grooves? Lee

No it's just different. If you're jumping you may have to go to jam, if at jam you may have to seat in several thou.

my first was a 3 groove lilja 30 cal, 1-17 twist. Killer barrel. Others have been good also but that first one was outstanding. I wouldn't hesitate to use it. --greg

I'm going to report a rumor. But the rumoree was R.G. Robinett, so that should be worth something, esp. as ir was the result of testing.

In a telephone conversation Randy probably didn't expect to wind up on the internet, he vouchsafed that the three groove barrels shot as well as the five groove when you kept the pressure up there. At slightly less pressures the five-groove shot better. Of course, most BR sorts don't know this, as "reduced pressure" is an alien notion.

Also fits with what Tim mentioned, though I know that's not exactly what he said.

Edit:

BUT: I've shot a 3-groove .30BR in competition. Sadly, it shot well at reduced pressure, about 2,825 MV with 118s. It also shot well with high pressure. Go figure.

I don't believe # of grooves have any effect on pressure.

I feel that three groove barrels are as accurate as any.

I was told by a barrel manfucturer that the 3groove if it was made right should be the most accurate barrel..so o tryed one on a 6BR (14 twist) and it was the most accurate barrel i have ever had, so i had another one made to the same spec's and it would not shoot. Buckshot i like to call it. so i talked to the barrel people and sent it back,so still waiting on it..I now have a 4 groove that looks very promising..
But the 3 groove i really never noticed any lack of pressure issues, but the barrel was very fast in the velocity department..in other words i came real close to the same velocity out of a 24" 3 groove that i was getting out of a 26" shieln(i think it was 4 groove, but could be wrong) with the same bullets & powder charge.

Jim, I would suggest if you are not comfortable with it,,,, have it chambered,,, and come shoot against us. I'm sure that constant doubt in your mind would be conducive to solid mid three's. If you don't want it, you have my number.

I probably should have stipulated the pressure thing as relevant to the 6's as I've no experience with the 30's.

Many of us are many, many years away from School days, probably haven't written much since then and a lot of folks don't place a lot of importance on it. It use to be an Understood that nobody was critisized for spelling, grammar and punctuation on these forums. If the folks running them are going to require everyone to be grammaticly correct, a lot of us won't be able to participate here.

Have you read some of the jumbles folks send in the eail? I have found it very easy to read them even though the spelling was not even close to the words meant to be written into the conversation. I think it is super non critical to be grammatically correct. Keeps our mind active trying to figure out What the Dog mean?

Pete, remember this on in the RF forum?

What we do in center fire with 6ppc is put dyno mat on first the the shrink tube it works well

Now you may understand exactly what's going on, I didn't. My problem is this:

Is it

What we do in center fire with 6ppc is put dyno mat on first.
The[n] the shrink tube.
It works well.

Or

What we do in center fire with 6ppc is put dyno mat on.
First the shrink tube.
It works well.

You may think that's a bull$hit quibble, but I'd like to know. I went so far as to look up dyno mat, and may well try it if I can figure out what's what.

Edit:

BTW, that was written by Lou Murdica. Don't know about you, but when Mr. Murdica speaks, I listen. The man is a winner. If it was written by one of the "I'm just gonna repeat another old wives tale" guys, I wouldn't give a crap.

Here is another one I remember, Pete, from the F-class forum. Written to a guy who didn't know what it was all about:

Belly Benchrest is a common mae for F class, but it differs in that targets are pulled and marked with a spotter between shots, so you can machine gun like in benchrest. [emphasis added]

O course, that should be "*can't* machine gun like in benchrest." But how would the not-quite-newbie know?

* * *

Posting should be more than about what you want to say. The reader is half the equation. I spell terribly, so keep a Google tab open to check spelling. As somebody pointed out, I still gefuch things, but I'm trying, not just saying "oh, it doesn't mater." (Ooops, that should be "matter.")

Jim,

I was one of the few that had the misfortune of seeing Nearly in StL after qualifying for the HOF. I would never make you do that to others. Lunch will do.
