260 in a Rem700 SA?

I'm thinking of getting a 260Rem barrel for a Remington 700 short action.
My plan is to shoot 130gr VLD bullets.
As these bullets are pretty long, will it be possible to feed from the magazine?
How does the cartridge perform when bullets are seated deep, and what kind of freebore is suitable for this combination?

If you are going to a custom barrel, it's all in how you cut the chamber. If you are talking about a factory Remington chamber, I seat Berger VLD 130s in my 260 at 2.945" and they will not feed through the magazine at that length. They do shoot REALLY well with IMR-4350.:D
 
Hi Joe, I would love to join you guys for a match at Beaverdale again, it was great fun :) maybe in a year or two. This year my savings is going to a trip to South Africa for the WBC10.

About the chamber my thougths are if it's going to be possible to feed from magazine the bullets must be seated deep into the case.

I realized know that I would probably not want the bullet to reach a possible doughnut in the neck and that limits the seating depth quite much.
Maybe it's not possible to use the magazine.

Hmm, single shot or get another rifle :confused::)

Install a Wyatts Extended box and you can shoot the 140 Bergers as well as the 130's. If your trying to shoot them in the issued 2.800" box, it's gonna be tight. For the 140 VLD's I've built rifles with .140" free bore and the Wyatts Extended Box and they've shot very well. In my .260 Tactical Comp Rifle I used a reamer with .100" free bore and the 130's in a modified AI Magazine. My COAL is 2.925" and I'm just touching the L&G's. In a standard AI Magazine, 2.880" is max. If your building a single shot for the 130's, I'd opt .100" free bore and jam em. Good luck.
 
I have a .260 Rem, (26" Rock Creek 1:8-twist on an AICS 2.0 stock) that's chambered in what Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool & Gauge is calling ".260 Remington Match." Basically, it allows me to load up 142 SMK's to .010" INTO the lands while still maintaining a workable magazine length,... but it's REALLY close :) I haven't tried the Berger 130's, but the 140's will at least 'touch' the lands and still work within a mag. If you're interested, I suggest you give Dave a call and inquire about a .260 Match Reamer for your setup. Hope this helps!

Probably not...

I have shot Norma 130 gr VLDs in a 6.5-08 that was chambered with a zero freebore, 1 1/2 degree throat. They were not happy until fairly close to the lands and when near the lands would not fit in a standard 2.800 inch magazine.

A steeper (2 1/2 degree throat, for example) might make this possible, but I would be concerned about how quickly it would wash out.

If you want to get all the ballistic capability out of a 260 I would suggest looking into a chamber that allows the bullet to be seated out a lot more than a factory chamber. The bullet sits so far down in the case that it takes up a lot of space that could be used for powder. Basically, that means a single shot.

You might even want to consider one of the "improved" version of the 260 which can probably come very close to the performance of a 6.5x284 with a lesser powder charge (and somewhat longer barrel life).

I am currently to order à Benchmark Barrel chambered with that specific .260 Rem Tactical reamer with only 0.065" of freebore in order to load with longer bullets (Berger 140 grains VLD, Lapua Scenar 139 grains and Hornady ELR X 143 grains) at magazine lenght.

Did you encounter any kind of problems with pressure by seating the longer bullets so deep into the casings? I am wondering since looking on the web, I understand that the base of the bullet bearing wall shouldn't be seated lower than the neck and shoulder jonction. I already know that I will lose some case capacity but I'm not too worried about that.

I will also get rid of the throat donuts with a K&M inside neck carbide cutter so it's one less thing to worry about.

Your answers about my pressure problems concerns will be greatly apreciated.
