Any and all thoughts on using a 25 WSM for 600 and 1000 yard Benchrest. Both pros and cons please.

Mike

The pros and cons are the same: you'll be the only one on the firing line shooting one. It'll be an experiment. Experiments are fun. And most often, failures.

Actually, Berger makes a .25 bullet with a B.C. over .500. Randy Robinett's 110-grain .25 has a B.C of .490. It is a bit higher BC than Jef Folwer's old .25 110 (10 versus 9 caliber ogive). I have shot the 110-Fowlers at 1,000 in a Factory Class rifle. Beat the .300 Win Mags a time or two, an I didn't shoot very many Factory Class matches.

If R.G. would make that 110-grain .25 with a boattail, the BC numbers would go up, but then, we don't shoot for numbers. His existing flatbase would be a good group bullet; you'd be giving up quite a bit for score.

Still, a very iffy proposition.

For almost two years, I have made most excellent 25 Cal. 110 Gr. BT - with a REAL world [G1] BC (3400 FPS MV) of .53. I have shot these bullets out to 800 Yd., via my .257 IdiotMag (.25WSM), at 3500+ FPS MV . . . though, vis this cartridge, and the barrels I've owned, the best precision is usually found at 3400-3450 FPS. For precision work with 25 Cal. bullets, this case is a LOT of capacity. RG

I never new you made a 25 caliber boattail bullet.I just checked your website on the homepage and can't find them listed.

I haven't made time to update the web-page - just too many other things to get done. And 25 Cals. are mostly a hobby anyway - most shooters are hooked on the communist calibers; precious few will try anything different . . . they'll just keep losing with the same old stuff . . .:pRG

Randy, I think most of us old enough to be on Medicare remember the Great 25 caliber Jacket Debacle of the 1990s (was it then?) A number of .25s built, then the J-4 jackets got bad, then disappeared.

Well, since Berger & J-4 have merged, that no longer applies. Still, it's hard to put those memories in the trash, where they probably belong.

Yes, this was in the 'point-blank' arena, but the REAL issue [PROBABLY] was not one of jacket quality, but rather the twist rates being used. For the jacket lengths, the 14" twist rate was already MARGINAL for the shortest jacket . . . once those dried up, the makers just made the same weights on the next longer jacket . . . the result was a a wreck, resulting in the classic conclusion jump: jacket quality had to be THE answer.:rolleyes:The 25s offer no REAL advantage, but rather marginal and somewhat subjective 'advantages' - ok, hair-splitting advantages . . . but, with properly matched bullet/twist, they are very good. For serious LR BR work, I'd opt for something on the order of a 257 Ackley; 25/08; or similar - the 25x47 LAPUA is also pretty good. RG

Randy, I am trying to figure out just what to build for a 600 yard Rifle, since we have that new range up in Huntsville.

I have a reamer that makes a 25x44 to a 25x47, (30 degree shoulder), I used to shoot it with Fowler 85 grn bullets at about 3450 usin N135. I made the cases by starting with Lapua 243 Win cases. What it really amounted to was a long 25 BR.

If I decided to build a 25, based on your 110 grn BT, what twist would be ideal at around 3300, which I think would be a realistic velocity for this case........jackie

A 1:10" twist will work, but ideally, the twist would be 1:9.5" for the 110 BT; a 1:9 wouldn't hurt - the 25x47 capacity should work well. During the last two seasons, for Hunter Class, I shot a 25x47LAPUA - H-4350 and IMR-4007 were equally good . . . but, I never chronographed either. RG
