22 Hornet Std Deviation

Final Note

I think this will be my final note on this thread, but will continue to enjoy the postings from you other guys. Went to the range again Friday & shot five more 10-shot strings over the chronograph with my Anschutz 22 Hornet, plus a few with my other Anschutz in 22 K-Hornet. I loaded with the same 13.0 grs Lil'Gun, used CCI 500, Rem 6 1/2 & WSP primers, and bullets were 40 V-Max & 40 Blitz King, plus one string with the 33 gr Green tips. Results were about the same on the chronograph with SD's from high 20's to low 30's. I put the target at 100 yards this time, since I wasn't shooting the rimfire, to see what accuracy looked like at that distance. The wind wasn't very co-operative ( I had windflags out, but not enough time to just sit & wait for best conditions. You'd really have to shoot at Pinetucky to understand what I mean here. When she really gets going, it's not unusual to wait 5 minutes or more for your condition to come back & hold for one more shot, then do it all again. This range is fully baffled & bermed, and is the absolute king of switches & swirls. ), so groups weren't wonderful, though I could pretty much see the potential. 70 - 80% of the shots make excellent groups, with the others out varying amounts depending on how impatient I got (and thus how badly the wind blew the shot around). After measuring these groups, I am impressed that box stock factory rifles will shoot so well. The 70 - 80% globs for all groups range from a little over 1/4" to a little over 1/2", with the entire groups measuring from 1/2" to 3/4" using a steel rule & subtracting for bullet diameter. Please be aware that I am not trying to make my factory Hornets into benchrest rifles, just trying to get a practical idea of what they can be expected to do, and trying to find a combo to reduce the SD. My conclusion, based on this very limited testing, is that Hornets just have high SD's, live with it, but practical accuracy is pretty darn good. Your comments & parallel postings are welcomed & enjoyed.
