I am in the planning stage of my first build. It will be a 6 Norma BR. 8 inch twist. I am using a Savage model 10 action that I already have and a Bell & Carlson Varmint Tactical stock that I have. Looking for advise for a barrel and trigger. Am leaning toward Shilen and a SSS competition trigger. Optics covered. As you can already see I'm not going all out, but working with a reasonable budget.
Thank's in advance, Kevin.

I have what you are building with the Shilen barrel and rifle basics trigger. Jim Briggs at Savage Shooters website has good barrels as well.
Very happy with the gun it shoots great.

What are you building it for? Sounds like a 600-1,000 yard gun.

Good question. I should have stated. It will be used for a combination of 100,200, and 500yd benchrest "ground hog shoot" and also chuck hunting out to 1,000yds.

Also, I don't want this thread to turn into a discussion on caliber as that decision has been made.:)

Well, you may want to sheck out www.savageshooters.com web site, I am a moderator over there. Come on over you will be made to feel welcome over there.

I am particle to the Sharp Shooters Supply (SSS) products. The competition trigger is a great trigger, and it is priced right. I have seen both people rave and dislike the rifle basix Sav 2 trigger, it is a good trigger but it cost a lot more than the SSS competition trigger. The SSS evolution trigger would be my choice if you was looking to spend a bit more money, it is a bit more than the rifle basix, but in my opion it is far superior for competition. These 3 trigger would be the only ones I would consider use on a Savage rifle, as there is a lot of aftermarket triggers (Rifle basiv sav 1, timney, jard.) out there but they are mostly glorified old style factory triggers. Jewel started out making proto type trigger but due to the release of the 6oz accu-trigger they never produced them in any quanity.

On barrels there is nothing wrong with a Shilen, they make exceleant barrels, and are some of the best out there. The wonderful thing about a Savage is there is a ton of "pre-fit" barrels out their and all you have to do is buy and screw them on. Jim Briggs, and Ch4d are offereing Criterion barrels (I side company of krieger.) and I have found thay they are just as good as a Shilen. Sharp shooter Supply offers Douglas and Brux, the douglas are just as good as the other two mentioned. the Brux are top of the line, and are a cut rifled barrel, i would put them up with any Krieger, or Bartline.

I am registered on savageshooters, same user name. Haven't been on hardly since the site was updated. For a while old post were lost and I just got away from it. I see they're back. If I understand it right the SSS Evolution has to be installed at SSS. I have a gunsmith who is doing my work here. He is a personal friend. I have considered getting my gun out to Fred, but for now I'm gonna keep cost down and hopefully, with our combined success help to build Stern Gunsmithing's reputation. We are both somewhat new to the sport, and have some success already. One step at a time. I know this won't be my last gun. Looking to gain experience in custom, more specific reloading, and better shooting. Then, may take the plunge on the next gun. Custom all the way.

Well got r together. looks promising.
