I have been using a 10/22 with a Shilen barrel and an 8 oz. trigger for informal benchrest and winning 1st place with it over and over. Am I crazy for using a Ruger semi-auto for this? I forgot to mention that it doesn't even have a benchrest stock and I'm shooting it off sandbags and bag squeezing. What do you guys think about this setup? :D http://takdriver.com/showthread.php?t=366

I think you should take it to a sanctioned IR5050, RBA, ARA, or whatever match and see how it does. If it's working for you, ride it out! Where are you located? Someone here can probably point you to a match in your location.
There's a big IR5050 3-gun match going on this weekend in West VA. Lot's of good rifles and shooters at that match. It'd be a good place to see how it stacks up.

Thanks, do you know how much airfare from milwaukee to TX? :D

Just make sure you rig up some sort of brass deflector so the shooter beside you won't be tempted to shoot you.

LOL, I can see your point. There was a guy shooting a M1 Garand to the left of me the other day. I actually enjoy the pain of 06 case smackin me in the face. It lets me know I'm alive :D

takdriver,

I just remember how thrilled I was once when the guy to my left was pulling the trigger on a 10/22 and half of the brass ended up going down into the back of my pants. Ended up being kind of distracting to say the least, or damned annoying to say it better.

Shirt over pants

Dave:
Walmart sell shirts large enough and long enough to go over your pants. Otherwise go to the longer and taller shop.

PS: You alsao need a hat with ear flaps. Hot brass in the ear is a pain.

Did you think you ate brass for breakfast that day? LOL Ewww grosss. :p

High

Takdriver:

With the number of Yanks heading South to Texas, the price might be high. Find one with in 4 hours and drive to it. Should be able to do that with ease.

Takdriver:

Get a piece of 3" wide, plastic or acrylic material and make yourself a rest plate. Use the front swivel screw to hold it on.. It will give you an idea of how it is going to shoot. Who knows, you just might have the one in a thousand 10-22's that will score well and embarrass a lot of people

Just a suggestion..

Dave.

Some numbers . . .

We have a class for the Semi-Autos, in the Rimfire Central "On-Line Matches" Here are some scores that will give an idea of the relative accuracy of the two types of rifles. We use the USBR target, so the scores are much lower than they would be on the IR-50/50 or RBA target.

Ruger 10-22T Tasco 6x24 Wolf Match Target

You're obviously not crazy for doing whatever it is you do if you first place over and over. You don't say against who or at what distance. I don't mean this the way you're gonna take it, but you probably will feel a little crazy if you take it to an ARA, IR 50/50, or similar match. But you should try it. You've been winning over and over with a 10/22 with no BR stock and an 8 ounce trigger, you need to see how the bottom looks. Truth is, you will most likely lose big, but it may prove you have a good talent and aptitude for benchrest.

What do you guys recommend for a true .22 rimfire becnhrest rifle?
