    Walt Berger Passes

So long Walt I first met Walt in October 1983 when he invited me to his home to see how he made bullets. He was set up in a small bedroom of his house in Phoenix and made bullets while we watched the World Series ball game on TV. I mentioned that he was watching TV and not looking at the...

We lost another shooter John Verhagen.

So sad to hear the news! It was always a pleasure to shoot with John, no matter what the circumstances were, he always had a smile! Our prayers go out to his daughter and family members, and he will be missed by all of us. May he rest in peace!

    Chamber Burrs

Update on removing chamber burrs Some may frown on this and others may cheer but this is what I did and it works. Took a 4 inch long piece of 1/4 steel rod and turned the first 1 inch down to .224 and then cut a 2 degree angle on the nose to match the angle of my reamer, polished the cuts with...

    Chamber Burrs

I am sure that some one besides me has encountered the small burrs present on the down wind side of the lands after reaming a chamber. Usually, it means that the reamer is getting dull and tend to smear a burr on the land in the throat but I have encountered this with new reamers and different...

    Changes

Hi Landy.....If you can, go back to a post that I made on this forum entitled "barrel block location" and you can see that we both arrived at almost same configuration for an action block. I tried bedding the action to the block and that seemed to help accuracy. If you go down a little further...

    Great Nationals in Phoenix

Jackie you know there are 2 kinds of shooters when it comes to crossfires...……..those that have and those that are going to! At the 2017 Cactus I had placed 5th at 100 in Light Varmint and was running 3rd after 4 targets at 200 so all I needed was a sub half inch group to probably win the Grand...

    322 in the 6PPC

Lt 31 Hi Jackie......The winner of the Light Varmint Grand at the 2017 Cactus was using 27.4 gr. of LT 31 and Berger Columns. Ask me how I know. If you don't feel like mixing up a batch of LT 31, about a grain more of Lt 32 works real good also. Gene

    Does anyone undercut their shoulders?

This post jogged my memory of a fellow shooter/ experimenter Don Jackson. If he told you something would or wouldn't work it was because he had tried it. He at one time cut the face of his Panda action with a 5 degree negative cone and cut the barrel shoulder to the same 5 degree positive...

    Barrel tennon counterbore?

Ruger 77 The Ruger 77 is made without a counterbore so the long Mauser style extractor can clear the barrel rear face. I think the original Mauser 98 was made this way and there may be others. I fit them with .010 clearance between the back of the barrel and the nose of the extractor. Gene

Things You Should Avoid Doing When You Are Over 70.

Face versus shower door Hey Jackie, I guess the arm might be better than your handsome face! About 3 years ago while visiting my daughter, I somehow managed to double up on my blood pressure meds at night and the next morning passed out in the bath room and tried to move a shower door with my...

    Steve Perry

This afternoon I received a phone call from Matthew Perry, Steve's son, letting me know that Steve passed away yesterday from a sudden heart attack. Plans for services have not been made yet at this point. I will post more info as I receive it. Steve was a controversial figure in the benchrest...

    scope mounting

Currently I am using the same rail gun to shoot both rim fire benchrest and also regular BR. With 2 different barreled actions, trying to use the same scope mounted to the rail top deesn't work to well. When going from rimfire to 6 PPC not much of a problem as the group point of impact is not...

    Changes

The rail was built by Bob Dodd (RFD) some years back. It came with a V block setup. I built the bored block and the off set scope mount. I have a few more ideas to try out and will post pics of on going changes.....for better or worse! Look forward as usual to seeing you next month. Gene

    Changes

Yes it is. 1.750 O.D. / .900 I.D. for the rimfire barrel. I was a little worried that the thickness of the Delrin might be a problem but doesn't seem to be an issue on the rimfire maybe because of the light recoil. By the way, the sleeve is in 3 pieces each 2.5 in. long for the 7.5 in...

    Changes

Finally got around to making up a new block that will accept the rimfire and the PPC barrels. The old block was 6 in. long and had 4 bolts per side. The new block is 7.5 in. long and has 5 bolts per side and is bored round to accept different dia. sleeves for the different dia. barrels. Also...

    Barrel block location

My barrel block is 6 inches long with 4 bolts per side and is 3.5 in. wide by 3 in. tall. It looks like the Young block is a little bigger than that, and is about 8 inches long with 5 bolts per side. I would think a typical barreled action with 1.450 diameter barrel would weigh in the vicinity...
