Inserts for Burris Signature Rings ???

Anybody have an idea who might have them? Has the Gov't banned them for some obscure reason:D? Wonder if they are made by some subcontractor for Burris and their deal has expired or something like that. I have been looking all over for them and backorder or out of stock is what I see at all of...

    It disappeared??

The reason I posted my question was that I just used the last little bit from that box from the 1980's. It still worked fine. Ya better hang on to your tubes. The tube with the black stuff is usually harder than the other. Mine was stored in a cool corner in the basement. I set the tubes a few...

    It disappeared??

Yup, +1 for the J-B Weld. It's a little on the wet side to suit me when first mixed. With it's long setting time I just wait till it starts to get a little body before I use it. I read somewhere that Rit dye colors it but couldnt get it to blend, even when first mixed. I only use it where it...

    It disappeared??

My favorite stock bedding compound apparently has gone off the market. Micro Bed by the Micro Sight Co. It had a good moderately stiff consistency and did not run where it should'nt it was also a good medium brown color when both parts were mixed together. Never had to add stain as with some...

    Bore paste-- is it effective?

I have been shooting from a dry bore. Oil patch is worth a try. Other stuff, I have seen Kroil & Hoppes with 50/50 mix mentioned. Hoppes has more than one type of bore cleaner offered. I currently have a bottle of Hoppes Elite bore gel and cannot say I'm very impressed with it. With the 50/50...

    Bore paste-- is it effective?

Agree! My loads are at or near top end according to whatever manual you may check and the barrel delivers two 5 shot groups with good accuracy. I like the .270, it's not a benchrest pedigreed cartridge and I surely do not expect that kind of performance. For me it sits comfortably in the middle...

    Bore paste-- is it effective?

I have a problem returning the barrel to Douglas because I bought it from an individual and not from Douglas or a jobber. I have no receipt and the original Douglas makers marks were turned off of it when we chambered it. If I would have had access to a bore scope prior to buying it I would'nt...

    Bore paste-- is it effective?

Bill, I,m going to try your throat polish method. I do have some 600 grit paste I used for lapping tooling at the machine shop I used to work in and have been retired from for a few years. I also have diamond paste but it's really not suitable for soft steel, we used it on carbide die inserts...

    Bore paste-- is it effective?

Barrel was polished to a higher degree than action (Spanish m48 Mauser). I wanted the action left at factory finish level. Blueing on the action was still near perfect and we just blued over it. Barrel & action were blued assembled. I wanted a Winchester Mod 70 effect with matte receiver and...

    Bore paste-- is it effective?

Thanks for the replies folks. I can say yes to a muzzle stop and yes to bore guide. As far as hunting rifle accuracy goes this rifle is great for 10 shots or so. Way more than enough to get your deer, bear etc at any reasonable range. The barrel is a #4 contour 26" long. Guess it could be called...

    Bore paste-- is it effective?

Hi all. I have been using bore paste made by Break-Free in a new Douglas XX .270 cal. barrel. I did a "break-in" by shooting 2 rounds, scrubbing, repeat for several times over and keep seeing prominent streaks of copper @ the muzzle. Only 2 things remove the copper, Sweet's 7.62 or bore paste...

Byron E. Cottrell Pa. gunsmith info

I can tell you a few things about Byron Cottrell. I do not know how or where he learned the trade. He lived very rural on the west branch of Pine Creek in potter county (north central Pa.) maybe 4 or 5 miles west of the town of Galeton, Pa. My Dad used to visit him in the early and mid-1960's...

    Can anyone confirm this information

In one of the shooting sports magazines in the 1980's (cant remember which) Rick Jameson or Layne Simpson reviewed new and old standby smokeless powders and used the term "gravimetric density" much of the time. Is this a correct term for describing a certain property of pwoder?

    Douglas barrel warning

I noticed Douglas states on its web site that 1 1/2" must be removed from the muzzle end of any new barrel they make, as in a 27 1/2" preturned barrel needs to be cut back to 26" finished length. Is there some manufacturing reason that the dimensions in that last 1 1/2" become erratic?

    270 Win or 280 Rem

+1 for the .270. I have two. A 1903-A3 Springfield w/24" bbl and a 270 AI on a 98 Mauser with a Douglas medium wt. barrel 26" long. Both have been absoultely reliable on deer past 400 yds. I use both Speer and Sierra 150 gr. BT's. I avoid the high cost "designer bullets". Both rifles are mapped...

RWO, thanks for the link. What little info there is does speak well of him. Guess the proof will be in the shooting if or when I get around to working it up.
