Poor boy needs advice on Savage choices

FWIW, this "poor boy" has introduced himself as just getting into centerfire. If he's the same as I was at that point, he doesn't even know what custom BR rig. Throwing him directly into the lion's den of .262 necks, turning to .0085, etc., etc., is overkill. Let him at least get his feet wet in...

Poor boy needs advice on Savage choices

Terbuck, if you have any thoughts of getting into benchrest, this listing in the classifieds is about as good as it get ... http://benchrest.com/class/index.php?a=2&b=5395 For less than $2,000 this set-up will give you as good a rig as money can buy that, at most, will need a new barrel at...

Poor boy needs advice on Savage choices

I've had several Savage Model 12/112 .223s and enjoyed them all. Still have one of the actions that has had a number of different barrels on it. My advice, as controversial as it may be on this site, is to get a good used Savage Model 12 BVSS-S or VLP in .223, put a good Weaver 36X on it along...

    6 mm ppc loading

Greenguy, I'm not sure what cartridge you are reloading but certainly NOT a 6 PPC! If your expansion ring is measuring .480, it's even larger than my 30 BR. If you are reloading for a factory chamber, then I prefer to neck size only with a Lee Collet Die. Boyd is correct that you don't want to...

    Norm Clark Passed away

Thanks for the word, Jim. Always loved having Norm up here and, unfortunately, this summer he had to go back home before he could shoot. We have lost one of the good guys in this game.

    Change happen Part III

The English language is the key. If you bought a house you can't afford, then you bought a house you can't afford. Not my problem, not the government's problem. You and the lender have a problem. I told a guy at the local diner, who was bemoaning his terrible state of affairs, that Cabela's had...

    Range Loading ?

I have no qualms with your desire for a little "challenge" in shooting, but let me caution you that building and shooting a 6 PPC will give you all the challenge you need. The best two cartridges for short-range benchrest are 6 PPC and 30 BR and shooting either one of them at a competitive level...

    Neck turning lubricant

Wonder what the market is for once used lubricants? About the same as the market for once-used bore cleaners!

    Neck turning lubricant

Everybody has there own and there probably isn't a known lube that won't work. My personal favorite is Lee Sizing Lube, a white "cream" that comes in a tube. I don't even know what's in it, but it is not oily or greasy, dries to a powdery substance which is totally whisked away with a pass from...

    Change happens

I surely share your pessimism. Looking down the barrel of my seventh decade, I have never felt more like a dinosaur than now. I don't know America anymore because that America doesn't exist anymore. And here's my thought: My generation is responsible for this current mess. I lived through the...

    5.7X28 advice needed!

I think there must be some sort of proprietary encumbrances on this cartridge because not a single manufacturer I can find offers a long arm or handgun other than FNH. Too bad. I would actually like one myself.

Martin, the Ruger No. 1/3 or T-C Contender/Encore would be fairly easy to do.

    5.7X28 advice needed!

This drawing http://ammoguide.com/?catid=253 -- one of few I could find in "English" seems to show .314" rim. This seems to be a super little cartridge, a good replacement for .22 Hornet if someone is so inclined. The project will probably have you breaking some new ground ... good luck.

    Is hurricane sandy a bellwether?

The global climate is certainly a curious discussion, fraught with disinformation and "don't clutter my brain up with facts". I publish a newsletter for a conservative think tank and the following is a commentary from this month's issue which is an interesting read: Frontline’s Climate Change...

    What kind of outcome

If he used the proper charge for RL-17 but used RL-7 I think the result of pulling the trigger on one would be catastrophic failure. RL-7 is around the burn rate of H4198 and RL-17 is around H4350. I would pull the bullets and start over if 'twere me.
