My latest “project” restoring a large vintage steam engine Governor

I was at Vessel Repair in Port Arthur a couple of weeks ago align boring the shaft lines on a new 90’ push boat. I went into their office to shoot the bull some and noticed a large steam engine Governor standing in the corner. I asked them where they found the Governor. They said I was the...

Bullet diameter - How big is too big? 30 BR

I haven’t got much to add since I do not make my 30 BR brass in a conventional manner. But one thing did catch my eye. The size of those Lapua bullets. Where are you measuring? The base might be a tad over .308, but I have never seen a Factory bullet measure that much over .308 on the actual...

Results of The NBRSA Varmint for Score Match at Tomball, “The Battle of San Jacinto”

Tomball Gun Club hosted it’s first Registered Varmint for Score Match today in cold and windy conditions. The temperature was 39 this morning, and we were shooting into 10 to 15 mph winds from the very first shot to the very last. Thanks to our two Match Directors, Richard and Dwayne Pullum...

    In My Tool Box

I might have posted this before, but my Dad had this old Crescent Tool Company Crescent Wrench that was probably pre-WW-2. It was used in our shop for years untill the adjusting scroll broke.. One day, a while back, I decided to fix it. I took a piece of grade 8 bolt material and machined a new...

Results, First Varmint for Score 100 Yard Match at Tomball

Both of us were shooting 35.3 grns. We both use the same seating depth, about .015 off the lands. One difference is I use a ridiculously light neck tension, just barley any at all, and Ed uses about .003.

Yep. Shooting my own 112. Ed was shooting them as well. This was also the first time both of us shot LT-30 in a Match.

    Look whati just got!

Good to hear from you, Bill. My primary game is Varmint for Score, but I am wanting to get back more in to Group Shooting. I only shot two Matches last year, but did manage to win the Texas State LV. Getting these dies might seem like a throw back in the bullet making game, but I think a lot...

    Look whati just got!

Lee, I have a couple of sample bullets that came with the dies, they appear to be in the 7 1/2 to 7 3/4 range. Lots of bearing surface. The paper work just indicates what the diameter of the shank should be on the finished bullet.

    Look whati just got!

Along time friend who quit shooting several years-ago had them. His man game was HBR, where he shot his own 30 caliber. He had these for group shooting as well.

    Tack Driver II

Wow, just a week away. Marilyn and I are leaving early Wednesday morning at around 5:AM. We are going to drive straight through, probably get there at midnight. Looking forward to it. I have a decent barrel and some decent bullets for my 6PPC. It’s going to be a fun time.

    Moore Scraping Method

Scraping machine surfaces is definitely an art. It is also quite tedious. My Dad had a complete set of scraping tools, not only for doing cast iron machine ways or any other flat surface, but also for Babbitt bearings. I never did much machine way scraping, but did quite a bit of Babbitt...

    Al's Perfect LR BR action???

Al, I said in my post comparing the 6.5 REM Mag to the 338 Weatherby,, I meant to say 338 Winchester as it and the 6.5 REM Mag share the same rim diameter.

    Al's Perfect LR BR action???

By the way. Everybody gets hung up on the seemingly brutal recoil of the overly large chamberings and just assume that the barrel and action are seeing the same thing. They don’t. The only thing that the barreled action sees is the amount of pressure placed on the bolt face upon ignition...

    Neck interference fit

.001 to .002 should be just right. As you fire the cases more, you might have adjust your die a tad down to maintain this as the brass tends to work harden in that abused area and refuses to give as much. For my competition rifles, (30BR, 6PPC), I actually lean more toward .003 to .004 for...

How Best to Produce Bevel at Muzzle

Unless you have some type of piloted bevel tool that will I insure.an even cut, I would not do it. You could very easily make things worse. If you have to do something, get a set of small files and a magnifying glass. Dress the dings, and only the dings, down to where they will not affect the...
