    Wilson 6ppc seater question

Common problem. Years ago when my gunsmith was using Clymer reamers, we had to polish out the Wilson seating dies to stop the cases sticking in the die. No big deal.

    Another benchrest legend passess

Lou and Ferrris may have left the building, but the legacy and legend of the PPC will outlast most of us. That great benchrest range in the sky is really getting some strong competitors now. True legends of benchrest ....RIP Brendan Atkinson

    A very sad day.

I met Flash Ebert at the WBC held in 1997 at Phoenix. He made time to chat with me, and I bought one of his barrels. That barrel was a freak, winning nine consecutive major matches and setting four new National records. It is a sad loss to the sport when these people are taken from us. Brendan...

    Weights For Weigh-In

If I could just make a comment on weights. I NEVER have my rifle right up on the weight limit. My LV's are built to be around 2 ounces light, and the HV (on a Kelblys SPG2) struggles to make 13 pounds with everything on it and in it. We do have check weights available at most registered matches...

Wait time for a barrel ?

Be grateful....we have waited nearly 18 months for a shipment of a well known barrel down here. Grrrrr

    Barrel Life

You know something? Life is like a roll of toilet paper - the nearer you get to the end the faster it goes. Bit like barrels - the nearer you get to the end the more inaccurate they become. Barrel life is in YOUR hands....load 'em hot you don't get a lot. When I first started in the 1970's we...

    Shilen DGA?

I have owned a number of DGA actions over the years - i had serial numbers 223,316,420 and a couple of others that I can't remember. Also had a little BPS which I wish I had not sold. They were all two lug bolts, and every one of them shot well. I still have one in a 220 Swift hunting rifle. The...

Too short a trim length effect on accuracy

After fire forming I measure the lengths on my Lapua PPC cases and as a general rule they come out around 1.495. I just make sure that they are all trimmed to the same length, and I check them after each two agg match to see if they have moved. No big deal.

    Top 3 Action Manufacturer's

Well, I have been in this game for some time now and I suppose I have had my share of custom actions. DGA Shilen - started with a .222, then a 6x47 then made it into a PPC. It was a 'Damn Good Action" Wichita Mini - bought it off Ron Hoehn at Kelblys in 1980 - great little action but the shell...

    Remington 6 1/2?????

Many years ago (in the 1970's) when people were sleeving Sako actions for the Australian Sporter Class rifles, it was recommended that the Rem 6 1/2 primers be used. This is because it was felt that the Sako has a weaker/softer firing pin spring than the equivalent Remington. They will work just...

kroil and a hard lesson learned

You are right there mate - I wonder if I marketed an after shave lotion that smelled like Kroil, would it sell well? Perhaps around machine shops and rifle ranges it might! Brendan Atkinson

    .222 40XBBR Reloading recipe please?

Many of us in Australia started with a .222 Rem. A lot of people bought the Rem 40XB BR as it really was the only over the counter benchrest rifle available here. I ordered a Shilen DGA LV in .222, and found that the best loads were 24 gns of IMR 4895 and a good 52 gn match bullet such as the...

I gotta know... BAT vs Panda

I have been shooting competitve benchrest since 1975, and have seen a lot of trends come and go. FWIW, I belive that some fads are actually determined by what is readily available at the time. When I first started in this wonderful sport, everybody ran a Hart barrel. I met Jerry Hart in 1980 at...

Need a coating that is slippery to N133 and ideas for powder pumps.

In my experience, N133 is a bugger of a powder to measure through any thrower. I have a custom built thrower that is extremely good with all powders except N133 - occasional variations of up to 0.5gn are not uncommon. I don't know why N133 should give this problem, but a number of shooters of my...

    1 in 15 twist for a 6PPC

We might have. I remember that there was a beer strike on at the time and Wayne Miller brought a whole trunk load of beer and hard stuff over from Saskatchewan in that big V8 car of his. He loaned me that sucker for the time I was there. The Saturday shoot was held in good conditions, but on...

    1 in 15 twist for a 6PPC

Dave, With all due respect, there is no way that 83 grain bullets will stabilise in a 1 turn in 16 twist barrel. I suggest you check that Hart barrel with a tight patch and a good cleaning rod. I was a good mate of Al Mirdoch's and stayed with him in 1980 when I attended the Canadian Supershoot...
