when you say basic... rebarrel, true action and bolt, better stock, custom chamber and dies ? Without being a benchrest shooter other than my sporter hunting rifles at modest ranges, 300 -400 yards, my Redfeild accutrac/range scopes can dial to 600. The furthest deer was at 300 yards, maybe 400...

as long as you're doing small caliber and you make sure you're set up good, otherwise no.

I use a chamber/recess lug brush myself.

ok... so.. in that case I just measured a fired .223 case and the neck OD is .255. That's quite a bit to turn. Don't rememeber what the OD is after sizing, but Look into a bushing to size what you need after uniforming the necks ? Maybe someone else can chime in with more experience.

don't know about this guy but I had to remove the spacer out of my Win M70 mag well. The only sporter I have with a long freebore is my Weatherby.

I doubt you have a tight neck in your chamber, but hey what do I know ? How do you know for sure it's tight ? I am assuming the rifle is a 722. In that case 99.9% it doesn't have a tight neck. You have no soot on the necks after firing ?

Neck tension and bullet seating make a huge difference with my .30-06. I also bedded the action too. Rest and shooter is part of the equation, but the first two are where I would work on. well I was a little disappointed when I peered inside the sleeve (which Forester sent me recently) to see a rough unfinished shoulder, but the bullet guide is good, and the dimensions in the sleeve are good so I suppose the shoulder isn't that critical. Benchrest guns aren't my thing.
