H4198 availability.

"It'll never work!"
In stock at one of my local stores the other day. At the same measure setting, it weighs the same as my 2019 lot.

For what it's worth.... -Al

Steve, I've moved on to LT30 in both my 30BR's.

I've never seen a 30BR that wouldn't shoot H4198, though.....which makes having some on hand worthwhile. -Al
I agree that H4198 is a great powder for the 30 BR, i still have a decent amount of the old stuff on hand and i will test it against the other powders. Unless it shows me a performance advantage, I'll go with the cheaper option.😁

Yes H4198 is leading the pack(??) in price per pound. (Supply and demand)
Most of the H Powders have also risen
But
N130 and Lt 30 prices have also risen

I would hate going to the Nationals or a major tournament with a saving of powder expense of only a few dollars per pound--What we wont pay for just a little improvement in our final score/group size.
The powder expense in overall expenses start looking like good money invested if its an improvement???

Sign of the times--things are just costing more!!!!!!

If your having fun you will be paying for it!!!

I tested a new barrel the other day, LT-30 against N-130. That barrel liked the LT30 a little better. I have a pound of H-4198 but I plan to have them burn it along with me when I pass, it's that Dear :)

A little history: In the beginning of our using the 30 BR many or most of used N-130. Came the year the only way one could buy it was in one pound containers, for more money of course then came the year none was shipped to America. Starting to sound familiar?

Al, do you think that the faster burn rate means it burns more completely, leaving less fouling?
I have a jug of it Al. I have only tried it in a couple of tests and it was ok. I have been having good results with LT-30 which I have around 30 pounds of so I've been burning it off :) At my advanced age< I'll prolly not get to burn off all the LT-30 !

I think you're right, Jerry. The bulk density of an individual powder is likely another factor.

My dream powder for the 30BR's would be a short cut version of H4198 (kernels about 2/3rds the current length).

H4198SC has a nice Hodgden-y ring to it. :giggle:

Good shootin' :) -Al

I found both IMR and Hodgdon to be a little crunchy at times so I use a powder trickle when testing these two. The H4198 shoots a little better on paper but there is really no difference when shooting Idaho Whistle Pigs.

Something I noted from the N-120 test, The bolt lift got heavy at the same numbers I was using with LT-30. I only ran the one string though.
When I get back in the spring I will try it some more. New zero freebore reamer that has shown tendencies to make the bolt lift a bit heavy.
