Fake Leupolds.

How can I pick a fake Leupold scope? I suspect that a friend of mine has one and don't want get caught. The scope is a silver VX11 3to9 by 40. When looked through it seemed a bit difficult to focus but otherwise quite clear. The lenses had very dark bluming and the gold ring on the objective did not seem to be the right color. Is it legal for shops to sell these scopes and has any one had any experience with them.

fake Leupold

They are made in China!
Go to the Leupold Co. website and they have an article there about them.

The shop could have been scammed by a wholesaler or figuring they were getting a super deal on real Leupold scopes. Unfortunately the dealer and customer are the ones who will be burned, and Leupold too by having their reputation hurt.

Any Thing of Value............

is subject to being counterfeited. Heck, every car salesman in Houston wears a fake Rolex.

Leupold has made it easy. They can tell you if it is one of theirs by the serial number. Kudos to Leupold.

We only wish it were as simple with other things.

Like that $1000 gold necklace you bought your wife, or girlfriend. That turned her neck green.......jackie

Fake serial numbers? so the Chinese don't mind building an entire fake Leupold scope but they won't add a real serial number??? Doesn't make sense to me.

Why wouldn't the Chinese make a run of fake scopes using real Leupold serial numbers? Seems it would be simple enough just to put real numbers on fake scopes. You call in and Leupold says yep it's one of ours.

All Lepold can really say is yes we did issue a scope with that serial number. You still won't have a clue if it is fake or not just by going on numbers alone, would you? joe:)

You would have to work for Leupold to know how they serial number their optics. Dont assume that its sequential as they roll off the line. I've seen fake optics of a couple of different brands and believe me that the Chinese aren't putting much thought into duplicating these optics.

Using the website that Leupold provides about recognizing fake optics, the 800 number and good old common sense it's not hard spotting a fake.

Do the fakes come in a nice Leupold box? Have warranty cards and other printed material, have the green cloth?

Chinese printed material is usually low quality.

Identifying fake Leupolds

My friends Leupold does not have lense caps, but he can hardly speak english so its a bit hard to ask him what sort of a box it came in. The thing that made me suspicious is the gold ring just behind the objective lense. The ring looks like white plastic not the usual gold color. The scope also has a thumb bump on the power setting ring that my Leupolds don't have.

what use would a rifle scope be to someone that can't speak english

Language

Since the scope is used by the eye the language doesn't matter unless he uses it to read foreign signs.

Just got a new leupold mark 4 that did come with lenes covers,so there goes the idea on the covers

Could it be one of the fake ones ??? I bet Lepould is made in China anyway. joe :)

just bought my second leupold, this time a vx-III. Neither of mine came with lens caps. Do the fake ones come with the scope cover?? Could be a hint...

Leupold

swerv512: Just recently bought a new (genuine) Leupold 4.5-14x VX111, and it also did not arrive with screw-in lens caps: they are an option, costing approx. $10 each for the "basic" models. My understanding, and backed up with my pre-2004 Leupolds is that all Leupolds made since 2004 have the screw-on lens cap availability. Some retailers will include the caps with the sale, others will not, and that depends a lot on how much they discount the price: low price, no caps/ slightly higher cost, caps included. When/if Leupolds ever become "made in China", it will be my last purchase.

Yes, they'll copy the S/N too!

My cousin has a business based in Hong Kong. They actually track counterfeit goods coming out of China. (Talk about job security!) He told me about a job they did tracking refrigeration gages. Chinese copies had "made in USA" - "printed in USA" - even serial numbers that matched the mfg's number. I don't see any good way to stop them though; there's tons of governmental complicity in China.
