As a matter of fact . . . . the Chinese ARE making some very good optical products! There were two companies at the last Shot Show that displayed some great looking scopes that were similar to some popular American made scopes. I recently tested two of those Chinese scopes, and they were both VERY impressive.

AND . . . . the Chinese scopes I tested cost about 90% less than a similar American made scope! Now I wouldn't expect to see a $100. Chinese scope out-perform a $1,000. American made scope, but you might be surprised at some of them. American companies have a spectacular reputation for quality AND backing their products with good service, but that price is hard to ignore. Of course Chinese scopes have absolutely NO warranty. If a Chinese product goes bad, you throw it in the trash, and get another one. Then you just hope the replacement product is good. In some cases it's pure junk . . . . but not always, as I found out.

I've met the owners and management of several American manufacturers (in the shooting industry) that do business in China, and I'm amazed to find so many popular items are now made in China. Some things that you wouldn't believe. Hell, even Ford makes a lot of their parts in China. Almost every company I know of has some of their stuff made in China. Here's why . . . . once any industry gets products made in China, it becomes impossible to compete with their prices. That forces the whole industry to get their stuff made in China if they want to stay in business.

You can't blame the Chinese. For better or worse - our foriegn trade legislation was enacted by our own elected officials. The wheels are now in motion, there's no turning back the clock, and we need to become more competitive (in every way) with the world market. It's a shame to see so many American manufacturers going broke. Unfortunately, even though our dollar is the backup currency of the world, its value is being destroyed - a little more every day. Politics is a tough subject for many of us, but we better take off the blinders, and get involved when necessary. Keep your eyes open and your powder dry.

check the box

just a little note i think leupold has addressed the issue of fakes by using stickers on the box that your scope comes in they have security features on them such as holograms if you tilt the sticker in the right direction you will notice the words (ballistic aiming system) in extremly tiny lettering

Fake serial numbers? so the Chinese don't mind building an entire fake Leupold scope but they won't add a real serial number??? Doesn't make sense to me.

Why wouldn't the Chinese make a run of fake scopes using real Leupold serial numbers? Seems it would be simple enough just to put real numbers on fake scopes. You call in and Leupold says yep it's one of ours.

All Lepold can really say is yes we did issue a scope with that serial number. You still won't have a clue if it is fake or not just by going on numbers alone, would you? joe:)

Leupold should be able to confirm the serial number and tell you who it was wholesaled to. Leupold tracks the serial numbers just like a VIN on a car.
