You are assuming rings in the lapped condition will better match up with the inconsistencies in the scopes tube if I am reading your reply correctly.
When I am bedding the rings I leave the tops off of them and simply lay the scope into the epoxy.No matter how bad the runout is on the scope it is bedded stress free or as stress free as I can make it.If I was to lap them and simply tighten everything up I COULD BE inducing more stress than when not lapping them at all.
I did talk with a former Leupold employee who told me I shouldn't leave my scope out in the sun but should keep it covered.
